Free Friday (“FL&R”) – September 8

Free and Legal Downloads? Yes, at least temporarily. Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of their releases.  The end of an offer may be based on the expiration of a set period of time or on a limited number of downloads.  But at least for now, here are songs that qualify as Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) downloads.
Finding songs that can be legally downloaded is easy. The difficult task is to find legally downloadable music that we recommend. Our plan is to post at least one FL&R song each Friday.
The Swedish duo of Michel Gustafsson and Ebba Ågren performs under the name Wy. They self-identify their genre as “hyper-desperate.” That seemed harsh, until we followed the lyrics of “You + I.” In describing the song, Ebba stated:
“’You + I’ is one of two love songs on the album. I usually have a hard time writing love songs, but I wanted to write about what it’s like being a couple when both of you struggle with social anxiety. It's about being uncomfortable around every person except one, and being each other’s safety zone.”

Lyrics of “You + I” by Wy
The softest boy with shining eyes
I could not behave
I could not contain myself

And I messed him up like only I can do
A part of me said "let him be"
And I let him be mine

My hands cannot hold the words from my tongue
But I cannot speak enough
And I can't shut myself up

And I stare as I always do
When I enter the room
I cannot relate
I don't know what I would say

As they think and they talk about sex
And I think about you
And I think about what to do next
Wanna get out
Wanna lie down
Wanna go home again

My hands cannot hold the words from my tongue
But I can not speak enough
And I can't shut myself up

Staying with the melancholy, Riley Pearce is a singer/songwriter in Perth, Western Australia. His song “Brave” was released in August 2015, but we only recently realized that the track is available as a free download. The trumpet plays a strong role in creating a woeful essence, while the vocal fluctuations add to the emotional tone of lyrics that are highly poetic without rhyming. We aren’t confident that the first line is right, but to understand the reference to the fluctuations, pay attention to the vocals in the first verse:
You're scared 'cause I answered
This feeling in my head is being there for too long
We sleep now with the light on,
But shadows make shapes in the light
And I don't know what they might be.
