“She” by YIP YOPS – A Song Review and Concert Opportunities

YIP YOPS show their sophistication with their music and their ages only when it adds to the entertainment. They perform at venues, such as The Independent in San Francisco, that wouldn’t allow them to enter as fans because the event is restricted to 21 and over. And they show up in dazzling clothing, ready to generate a dazzling performance. The above picture shows the four members in thumbprint swirls, next to Lauren Ruth Ward.

But listen to the start of “She” to appreciate the musical sophistication of the YIP YOPS. And attend one of their shows to appreciate their performance energy and skill. Residents in or near the San Francisco Bay Area have two upcoming opportunites to see the band. YIP YOPS will support Lauren Ruth Ward in Santa Cruz on May 26, two days after opening for Too Many Zooz at The Independent. Indie Obsessive has made no secret that it is a fan of Lauren Ruth Ward and has enjoyed the busking-honed skills of Too Many Zooz, when the trio opened at The Fillmore in 2017.

“She” begins with a focus on a combination of percussion and slightly distanced vocals. The percussion isn’t limited to traditional components of a drum set. Determining the source of the “slapping” sound is another reason to catch a show by YIP YOPS. We aren’t typically as interested in a song that doesn’t include a guitar (other than the bass), but YIP YOPS bring male/female harmonization, strong basslines, and a synth that provides the higher frequencies sensibilities.

YIP YOPS are from Palm Desert, California. The members are lead singer and guitarist Ison Van Winkle, drummer Ross Murakami, bassist Jacob Gutierrez, and keyboardist/ vocalist Mari Brossfield.

Lyrics of “She” by YIP YOPS
She wears the colorful clothes
Stained by the colors of her skin
She is the only one who knows
Where everybody's going
And where they've been

She wears nothing but her face
She shows herself to anyone who asks
She knows the feeling of pain
As someone who sees the world the others seem to pass

She knows
She knows
She knows
Simple minds
Are hard to find
She knows
She knows
She knows
She won't tell
But still I try
To find out what is behind
What is in her eyes

She knows the secrets of us
Quietly reading our lips of love
She has no one to trust
She's trapped in the memory
She left inside her mind
(She's alright)

She knows
She knows
She knows
Simple minds
Are hard to find
She knows
She knows
She knows
She won't tell
But still I try
To find out what is behind
What is in her eyes

I know a girl
In a world
Of another kind
She knows the truth
We were taught
To never find

She knows
She knows
She knows
Simple minds
Are hard to find
She knows
She knows
She knows
I think I fell inside her mind
Nothing left to decide
I will search until I die
Looking into the eyes
I am left behind
