“Roses in the Dark” by Mateo Morris – A Song Feature

The passion in Mateo Morris’s vocal delivery and the poetry in the lyrics capture the painful tension of sensing a presence that lingers deep into the absence of another. The first verse explains:
Your voice still haunts the halls
Soft like winter calls
I feel your shadow near
Whispering what I fear

And the darkness in the instrumentation further enhances the impact of the lyrical message. The highlight of the instrumentation resides in the bridge, which begins around 2:24. The intro offers a glimpse of the sequenced piano-guitar interplay, but it’s in the bridge that their call-and-response sequencing intensifies to bring the underlying tension into focus.

The Soundcloud page of Mateo Morris indicates that he is based in Ashburn, which we assume is Ashburn, Virginia. Morris is a passion-packed Rocker creating powerful Rock music that blends raw energy, emotion, and timeless sound. With a style that draws from classic rock, alternative rock, and modern rock, he delivers songs filled with electrifying guitar riffs, driving drums, and powerful vocals. From emotional rock ballads and gritty Hard Rock anthems to energetic Indie Rock tracks, each release captures the spirit of authentic Rock and Roll.

Intros with Vehicles Revving

Today’s rabbit hole is brought to you by Water From Your Eyes, a Brooklyn, New York, duo comprising Nate Amos and Rachel Brown. The original intent was to pair their song “Driving Classics, Playing Cars” with “The Reset Button” by scott is okay. Both songs are characterized by lyrical density.

The trouble is that “Driving Classics, Playing Cars” begins with the sound of a revving vehicle that reminded us of another song that wasn't immediately remembered. So, off we went, trying to find that other song. It was “All Hell Broke Loose by Stanley Clarke. The revs are certainly not identical, but close enough to trigger a recognition. This led to creating a playlist of songs that include an engine rev in the intro. The playlist is embedded at the bottom of this lengthy post. The playlist includes songs with car revs, motorcycle revs, and one jet rev (from The Beatles).

Nevertheless, this post begins with the only song that does not include a rev in the intro - “The Reset Button” by scott is okay.
Lyrics of “The Reset Button” by scott is okay.
Woke up feeling irreverent
Like some kind of unnamable precedent is setting in
Hoping it's sticking round for the long run
And it's not a temporary thing

'Cause I've had temporary things
Fleeting things and feelings
That come and go like passing seasons
And if it’s seasonal, better keep tabs on the weather

And bank on it getting better
Bank on it getting better
[Repeating]

The thoughts in my head again
Cutting ties, starting fresh and stretching these legs
And dipping my toes into uncharted waters
But I don't want my socks getting wet

Change is easy-breezy when the pressure gets to me
But not when I want it, not when I need it
Not when I'm feeling the need for something to start getting better

To start getting better
[Repeating]

Haven't explored education
Architecture or animation
Too much time on Chaos Theory
And you’ll proceed with too much caution

Too late for a new vocation
Stray the path, make deviations
Spent my time with my hand gently
Hovered over the reset button

Struggle with those deep connections
No best friends or close relation
Got real close but never really
The goal post change up their position

Spent time hounding for perfection
They'd slip up, claim cancellation
High and mighty, as if I’d be
Without my fare share of sanctions

Hoping there’s no correlation
With my face and past rejections
I swear I think I might lose it
Bomb one loss from detonation

Bonding more with indecision
As if time weren’t of the essence
Almost thirty, how unearthly
Years slip by without permission

Start getting better
[Repeating]

Driving Classics, Playing Cars” - the motivation for the rev-in-the-intro rabbit hole
Lyrics of Driving Classics, Playing Cars by Water From Your Eyes
Look
Look, I'm concerned as a matter of fact
Contact, contact all this shattered impact
Shake three

Desire in crisis now a longing for truce
Yeah, the long hard road from here to the truth
Shake six

Look, face contoured, face the music, the crash
There's a war on stage, smoke the glow into ash
Shake nine

Outside the state somebody's begging for moves
It's the long hard road from here to the truth
Shake two

Look, I'm concerned as a matter of fact

“Campr” by Broke Royals – A Song Feature

Broke Royals released the title track of their upcoming album “Campr.” The album is scheduled to drop on February 6, 2026. The song changes colors numerous times. Following an invigorating intro, the vocals-driven segment (at 0:38) relaxes slightly, but retains the attention of the listener. At times, the instrumentation and vocal melodies are synchronized.

Around 2:15, the texture of “Campr” shifts again, as the guitar takes on the sonic qualities reminiscent of the early releases from The Byrds. Coincidentally(?), their previous album was available via Byrdland Records.  Frenetic instrumentation follows, until the creatively off-kilter conclusion.

Broke Royals are based in Washington, D.C. The five members are Philip Basnight (vocals, guitar), Colin Cross (drums), Taimir Gore (bass), Rebecca Basnight (keys), and Ben Wilson (guitar),

“Born on a Train” by Hallucinophonics – A Song Feature

Lyrics that allow for personal interpretation tend to resonate most deeply. Even better are those whose meanings shift with one’s state of mind, granting them a lasting relevance. Thus, the metaphor-laden “Born on a Train” is built for a long shelf life.

If you are born on a train, you are in a state of moving forward, but not necessarily with any control over the travel. In comparison, mom was a freight train, dad was a bus, sister’s a car, and brother’s a truck. There are many possible equally logical interpretations.

Instrumentally, the crystalline guitar establishes the soundscape during the verses. Still, the flute is the attention-grabber. While the guitar carries warmth, the flute is more aligned with the pensive vocals.

Quoting the bio of London-based Hallucinophonics:
“The band's name reveals its mission: the precise articulation of hallucinogenic experience through sound. Their compositions weave together ethereal textures, progressive architectures, and hypnotic rhythms, exploring themes of consciousness evolution and existential discovery.
From transcendent space rock anthems to introspective nocturnal transmissions, their music occupies that sacred territory where the cerebral meets the celestial. Hallucinophonics represents a bold new chapter in psychedelic music—an invitation to perceive reality through different frequencies and discover that the most extraordinary journeys often begin with simply closing your eyes and listening.”

“Born on a Train” by Hallucinophonics
Lyrics of “Born on a Train” by Hallucinophonics (with some best guesses)
“I’m born on a train
And I’ll die on a train
Travelin’ through my veins like heroin

My blood is a freight train
Picking up speed
My soul is a slow train
Wandering the reeds

My mom was a steam train
My dad was a bus
My sister’s a car
My brother’s a truck

We’re rolling through your town
As we’re looking for drugs
We run out of gas
We fill ‘em up

Riding through the night
I can’t see the end in sight
Don’t you try to talk me down
I’m on a train

I once had a lover
She left me alone
She ran out of gas
So I left her at home

So if you should see her
Don’t mention my name
I’ve never been a man
And I’ll always be a train

Cause I was born on a train
And I’ll die on a train
I’ll run on your tracks
Like a runaway

My blood is a freight train
Picking up speed
My soul is a slow train
Wandering the reeds

Riding through the night
I can’t see the end in sight
Don’t you try to talk me down
I’m on a train

“Radio Player” by Josaleigh Pollett – A Song Feature

The song has a familiarity, even during the first exposure to “Radio Player.” The song is a collaboration of Josaleigh Pollett and Jordan Watko (aka “Crowd Shy”), which was not without difficulties, since Pollett is based in Salt Lake, Utah, and Watco has moved to Japan.

In talking about the track, Pollett said:
"’Radio Player’ is a song about memory and fear, loosely based on seeing the movie Poltergeist at too young an age. It is a journey through the hallways of childhood that we leave a light on within. A pink light flickers on and beckons the listener through, releasing them changed and covered in ectoplasm five minutes later.”

     “Radio Player” by Josaleigh Pollett

Lyrics of “Radio Player” by Josaleigh Pollett
Radio player, I fell asleep.
Drums in the basement, turn up the TV.
I tried to listen to what they were playing,
I tried to sing in my sleep.

Radio player, do you listen to me?

A visit to where we used to live,
Break in and enter, low river gets in.
If the guy next door was the kid from before,
Now he’s big and we better run quick.

Radio player, what trouble we’re in.

The house isn’t there anymore,
And I don’t know if it ever was.
Memory is a fickle thing when you cope with the damage like us.

Radio player, look what we’ve done.

When I fell asleep it was dark,
Now a light is coming from the TV

When I fell asleep it was dark,
Now a light is coming from the TV

When I fell asleep it was fine,
Now the dog cries out with a feeling,

And the clock stopped blinkin’ at four,
And a wonderful light tries to open the door

But I put my back into it,
And a heart inside is gleaming,
And I hear it say it loves me,
But it wants me to stay dreaming

When I fell asleep, it was dark,
Now a light is coming from the TV

I told you that I saw a ghost
I just need you to believe me.

An Animated Short – WAR IS OVER!

We are smitten by this video to the point that it overcame our reluctances to post Holiday-related songs or to post videos that have the likelihood of becoming viral (we prefer to leave high-profile songs and videos for high-profile blogs).

WAR IS OVER! was written by Sean Ono Lennon and Dave Mullins. It features John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s iconic anti-war holiday song “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).”  Quoting the YouTube description:
“Set in an alternate WWI reality where a senseless war rages on, two soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict play a game of chess. A heroic carrier pigeon delivers the soldiers’ chess moves over the battlefield as the fighting escalates. Neither soldier knows his opponent as the game and the war builds to its climatic final move. Whoever wins the game, one thing is for certain: there are no winners in war.”

Lyric of “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas (War is over)
For weak and for strong (If you want it)
For rich and the poor ones (War is over)
The road is so long (Now)
And so happy Christmas (War is over)
For black and for white (If you want it)
For yellow and red ones (War is over)
Let's stop all the fight (Now)

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

War is over
If you want it
War is Over
Now

Happy Christmas! [Repeating]

“Echo” by Amber Jade Smith – A Song Feature

Echo” opens in cinematic darkness, its thunderous chest-rattling percussion leaving the first imprint - and rightly so! But the listener quickly learns that the song from Amber Jade Smith offers far more. Her commanding voice cuts through, almost untouched by the force of the percussion. And the many shifts in vocal tempo heighten the impact of the intelligently crafted lyrics, with quicker passages injecting urgency and slower phrasing creating moments of calm. The shifting is particularly effective starting with the verse at 2:55.

The song is about the pains of a love relationship. Amber Jade Smith explained:
Echo’ is an ambient and emotive reflection on love, fear, and self-awareness. Written in the middle of the night during a period of deep reflection, the song explores unhealthy attachments, the fear of abandonment, and the ache of wanting love to be returned even when it hurts. Through honest vocals and atmospheric soundscapes, I tried to turn vulnerability into beauty and creativity, transforming my desire to be loved into a moment of raw, honest expression. ‘Echo’ was produced by the amazing Josiah Manning, hitting sticks on the studio floor and creating soundscapes with recorders and keys.”

The mention of turning “vulnerability into beauty and creativity” most likely relates to composing “Echo” as a whole, but the turn to beauty also describes the entrance of strings (or synth-generated violins) at 1:10, when the the percussive intensity temporarily exhales. But, much like the shifting vocal tempo, the strings are most affecting near the song’s end, as their gentle beauty offers a striking counterpoint to the percussion’s fierce weight and the echoing anguish in the vocals.

Amber Jade Smith was born in South Wales and is now based in Plymouth, UK. She has always been highly interested in music, influenced by artists such as Stevie Nicks, Daughter and The xx.

     Echo” by Amber Jade Smith

Lyrics of “Echo” by Amber Jade Smith
I don't wanna fight,
Nothing I ever say seems to come out right,
And even if it did, I have nothing left to give.

We ended up hollow, my love was never intended to be borrowed,
I wanted you to take it from me, keep it from me,
Like you needed it to live.

Because I needed it like water needs to flow,
Like a river needs somewhere to go,
Reaching for somewhere that I don't feel alone.
Oh my love, it was always yours to keep, you know.
We were never in too deep at all.
All I ever wanted was your echo.

Your echo….
Your echo….

You were always gonna fly,
But you and me were looking at two different skies,
The sun never shone in mine,
But don't you dare tell me that I didn't try.

Because I needed it like water needs to flow,
Like a river needs somewhere to go,
Reaching for somewhere that I don't feel alone.
Oh my love, it was always yours to keep, you know.
Hold on till your knuckles start to glow,
All I ever wanted was your echo.

Your echo…..
Your echo….

Well I guess that it's naive to wear my heart upon my sleeve
I can't believe that it meant nothing after all.
Maybe I won't ever know what happened to me long ago
I thought that you'd be there to break the fall.

Because I needed it like water needs to flow,
Like a river needs somewhere to go,
Reaching for somewhere that I don't feel alone.
Oh my love, it was always yours to keep, you know.
We were never in too deep at all.
All I ever wanted was your echo.

Your echo…..
Your echo…..

“Breathe Strong Little Fighter” by Into The Afterimage – A Song Feature

We don’t possess the artistic skills to have personally experienced cathartic release through a song of our own. But like all music lovers, the power of a song is sometimes the vehicle for empathetically transporting into deeply emotional real-life experiences of others. “Breathe Strong Little Fighter” carries that power.

In talking about the song, Ryan Vander Werff of Into the Afterimage shared:
This is the most personal song I’ve ever written—about my first son, Niko, and the days we spent in the NICU after he was born with a pneumothorax. It’s a love letter to his fight for breath, and to the quiet, terrifying beauty of watching someone so small teach you what strength really means. Musically, it blends ambient guitars, heartbeat percussion, and cinematic builds—starting with soft tension and swelling into a soaring, choral climax.”

In the opening minute of “Breathe Strong Little Fighter,” and in other parts of the track, the piano and vocals cooperatively alternate in occupying the spotlight while working toward a shared purpose of building beauty and life—in some ways similar to the sun and rain taking turns during the growth of a flower. The weave of piano and vocals possesses an emotional power that is soon complemented by the physical power of commanding percussion. Later in the song, guitar is the sonic drive.

Still, the vocals and the lyrics are the highlight of the single from Vancouver's Into The Afterimage. RJay Dalton has a range, as well as an ease of travel through that range, not available to many vocalists. Our comparison is to Conor Mason, the lead of the UK-based band Nothing but Thieves. The full lyrics are included at the bottom of this post. But the verse that most deeply affects us is “Maybe this is love, to watch and not control // To break, but still believe you’ll breathe, you’ll grow.”

Reading the band’s Spotify bio, we applaud “Into the Afterimage is the project delivering true ROI: Reality, Outrage, Inspiration. Everything else is just background noise,” and “We create music engineered for maximum impact, minimum filler, anthemic hooks, cinematic tension, and drops designed to rearrange your spine. We’re here to merge & mutate: emotionally, sonically, spiritually… and to make you feel at least 3.14% cooler just by having us on your playlist.”

Breathe Strong Little Fighter” by Into The Afterimage
Lyrics of “Breathe Strong Little Fighter” by Into The Afterimage
There’s a hole where the air should stay,
A siren that beeps with your name.
Numbers climb like prayers on the screen,
I count them just to keep me sane.
You move, the world restarts,
Every flicker a fragile art.

And I’d give every sleepless hour
To keep your breath from fading away.

Breathe on, little fighter
You’re wired to survive.
The room forgets its silence
Each time you open your eyes.
Where I swear I saw the night sky
Fill your fragile lungs tonight.

Feeding tubes and heartbeat songs,
Plastic halos that drum along.
You are proof that fear can sing
And mercy sometimes wears a machine.
We’re stitched between alarms and hope,
Learning how to go, but slow.

And I’d give every sleepless hour
To keep your breath from fading away.

Breathe on, little fighter
You’re wired to survive.
The world holds its breath
Each time you come alive.
Your ribs are drums, your veins are wires,
Oh and for you, sing all the choirs...

Maybe this is love
To watch and not control.
To break, but still believe
You’ll breathe, you’ll grow.
Every monitor’s a prayer,
Every sigh’s a vow.
If this is the edge,
Then teach me how to now.

Breathe strong, little fighter
You’ve already won.
The fear turns to faith
With each rise of your lungs.
Nice. Inquisitive. Kind.
Obliterates the impossible
One breath at a time...

“Fly” by Eric Silverman – A Song Feature

It seems increasingly, songwriters are tucking a track’s greatest asset into the back pocket, saving it for the final stretch. In a streaming era of rapid-fire music exploration, that song composition approach carries a risk: listeners may render an early verdict and move on long before that strength ever reveals itself. But a musical beatitude is “Blessed are those who listen throughout, for they shall be rewarded from time to time.” The song “Fly” is certainly one of those times

Patience isn’t a prerequisite for reaching the reward near the end of “Fly.” Eric Silverman’s single is engaging from the first moments, with the percussion immediately seizing the listener’s attention. Early on, there’s a captivating irregularity to the rhythm, while the chorus shifts to more conventional drum-set elements. The result is a percussive landscape that remains varied and compelling throughout.

The vocals, tinged by an appealing megaphone effect, add another layer of intrigue. Though “Fly” isn’t a vocals-driven track, it still carries a distinct vocal personality—relaxed, but subtly urging the listener to lean in.

Still, the true payoff arrives with the guitar solo around the 2:40 mark. The solo carries both the precision and the emotional fluency of Carlos Santana. For much of the solo, the guitar climbs in deliberate, stepped pitch ascensions, heightening its impact. Then around 3:26, the solo starts to drop in pitch.

Eric Silverman is based in Oakland, California. “Fly” is a release via Oakland’s Royal Oakie Records. The song was produced, engineered, and mixed by Damien Lewis (Justin Timberlake, Rhianna, Lizzo), combining anthemic Indie Rock with Psychedelic Rock, Folk, and maybe a touch of Yacht Rock.

As far as what the song means to him, Silverman says “I think at the time I was (and I guess still am) obsessed with the idea of changing, evolving, knowing that we are different everyday. So the song is in that spirit. Change or die. Worm to butterfly.”

     “Fly” by Eric Silverman

Lyrics of “Fly” by Eric Silverman
The dreams are all the same
It happened once again
It’s like I’m falling

To look inside myself
And just see someone else
I come back crawling

We change or we will die
From worm to butterfly
We are evolving

The bodies in the sky
Give the universal sign
Don’t stop revolving

Fly
Fly
Fly
Fly

The sun sets in the sky
So morning tells you why
You will awaken

Embrace with the unknown
You struggle and you grow
Echoes forever

We change or we will die
From worm to butterfly
We are evolving

The bodies in the sky
Give the universal sign
Don’t stop revolving

Fly
Fly
Fly
Fly
