“The Thread” by Virginia MacNaughton – A Song Feature

A search through the 13 years of posts on Indie Obsessive found only three occurrences of the word “flugelhorn.” To some degree that reflects our tastes, but we have featured many chamber bands, so it is more of an indication of the rare use of the flugelhorn in the Indie Universe. The flugelhorn shares many of the qualities of a trumpet, but is warmer and mellower.

The Thread” is the title track of an upcoming album from Virginia MacNaughton. She plays the piano and provides the vocals for the song. The flugelhorn in contributed by Felix Burling. MacNaughton explains that “The Thread” is about a new romantic connection and the persuasiveness of that connection, the sense of her new lover “imbuing everything.”

Virginia MacNaughton is based in the UK. Her album, “The Thread,” is scheduled for a February 27 release. Currently, the album can be pre-ordered via Bandcamp (virginiamacnaughton.bandcamp.com/album/the-thread).

Lyrics of “The Thread” by Virginia MacNaughton
I will embrace this
Will you?

Alone I'll face this
With you

I'll reach up, align the stars
Before the golden hour
And if I overshoot this time
Then I'll come down in your next shower

In such a short time
I know you

The thread is pulling
Me to you

And as the moon is full and blue
The wave is strong and all I ask is
I can be the wind that whips you up
And spins you off your axis

I can't erase this
Like you

Because I got just one more moment
In your presence as a token
This is my concession prize
I could have left here quite unbroken

As a deadly winter sets in
Lit by only flashes
You will be the snow that settles
On my skin and my eyelashes

Because I got just one more moment
In your presence as a token
This is my concession prize
I could have left here quite unbroken

The thread is pulling me to you
I can't erase this
Like you

“Temptation” by Dax – A Song Feature

Firstly, we confess there are other bloggers far better equipped to discuss the discography of Dax. He is primarily a Rapper, so his music resides in a genre that we prefer to leave for reviewers with a greater appreciation and knowledge of that style of music. Still, Dax is a prolific composer and with each release that finds its way to us, both the clarity and the intelligence of the message induce multiple listens.

Dax uses diversity in genres as a toolbox. He is primarily a Rapper, but has vocal charisma across a range of styles. And Dax shifts styles depending upon what he wants to communicate — aggressive Rap to express anger, melodic passages to expose weakness, and sometimes naked spoken-word when divulging accountability.

Temptation,” describes the on-going battle to stay true to your moral compass. Both the first and the last verse of the song begin “Temptations outside, knocking at my door  //  I won the battle last night, but I’m still at war.” Thus, “every moment of resistance to temptation is a victory.”  For the message, Dax selected a style that is far more closely aligned with Country than with Rap. The exception is the verse that starts around 2:09, when there is a brief masterful switch to his musical base. Instrumentally, our favorite contribution is the banjo that is particularly apparent near the end of “Temptation” (after 2:44).

Dax is Canada-born, although his Facebook site indicates that he is now living in Wichita, Kansas. He is a 26-year-old singer and Rapper who has been described as “currently making something out of absolutely nothing.” We don’t agree – Dax possesses both poetic and musical skills that set him apart from others.

Lyrics of “Temptation” by Dax
Temptations outside, knocking at my door
I won the battle last night, but I’m still at war
I starve my flesh,
then feed my spirit with faith
Then raise hell till it’s up at Heavens Gates

Temptation creeps into an idle mind
Lack of purpose is the place seeking pleasure resides and feel safe
(and get’s its strength)
Temptation loves fame, serves ego and pride
Mama told me two wrongs, don’t make no right So I pray
(the temptation away)

Temptation makes slaves out of lustful eyes
It’ll rob you of your happiness And pay you attention with lies
In that darkness, you’ll find shame ‘s not worth your time
then appraise your Sin for the cost of peace of mind

Temptation creeps into an idle mind
Lack of purpose is the place seeking pleasure resides and feel safe
(and get’s its strength)
Temptation loves fame, serves ego and pride
Mama told me two wrongs, don’t make no right So I pray
(the temptation away)

Down by the Riverbend
in the garden, where the snake tempted Adam and Eve,
they ate the fruit and from those seeds
grew the roots of this family tree
It’s why we struggle it’s why we fight
our mother’s nature, fathered time
the human race, but fall behind
dying to live but all living to die
for goodness sake,
we’ve been a tone for sins and given God’s grace
stuck in this Babylonic world we can't escape
going to war with Demons every day,
the soul and spirit break that’s why I pray

Temptations outside, knocking at my door
I won the battle last night, but I’m still at war
I starve my flesh, then feed my spirit with faith
Then raise hell till it’s up at Heavens Gates

“Nightfall” by Paranoïd – A Song Feature

The initial two minutes of “Nightfall” are vocally invigorating, as a MGMT-esque Moog establishes a strong foundation for engaging vocals. Paranoïd is based in Toulouse, France, but the lyrics are in English. The band explains that the song is about “a dystopian nocturnal walk between dream and reality, clarity and darkness.”

Still, the magic of “Nightfall” resides in the two-part instrument-focused bridge that begins shortly after the two-minute mark. Initially, the instruments take an equalitarian approach of cooperative aggression that contrasts with seemingly distanced and echoed vocals. Suddenly, the track from Paranoïd reduces tempo, deceptively indicating a return to the body of the song. Instead, “Nightfall” explodes (at 2:54) into a frenetic guitar-driven triumph.

The members of Paranoïd are Pierre-Adrien Marot-Babilée (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Martin Jaussan (bass, Moog), and Lorenzo Luciani (drums). Arnaud Beyney is credited as an “additional live guitarist.” Quoting an interesting description of their song:
How about some more nocturnal wanderings, some romantic-depressive introspection wrapped in nineties guilty pleasures? A voice reminiscent of Brian Molko (Placebo) and instrumentation similar to Foals or White Lies. A throwback to '91 in a London club where Thom Yorke might have gotten lost, secretly confessing his unconditional love for The Cure. Impossible love or passionate fusion, Paranoid creates its own unique identity.”

“Kill The Ghost” and “Real Estate" by little image – Song Features

As a strong follow-up to “Kill The Ghost,” the first 2026 release from little image is a darker “Real Estate.” The band is based in Dallas, Texas, and if formed of Jackson Simmons (vocals/guitar), Brandon Walters (bass/synth), and Troy Bruner (drums). Their sound is big and aggressive, which isn’t easy for a trio.

Kill The Ghost” has proven to be a gig favorite. The energy of the song electrifies a venue. It’s an introspective presentation of life. The band explains:
KILL THE GHOST” is an anthem that captures the never-ending struggle of the human spirit and its battle against itself. Often, the greatest obstacle to becoming who we’re meant to be is our own resistance. This song serves as an invitation to let go of what holds us back and to step into something greater than ourselves.”

The lyrics of “Real Estate” are similarly inward looking (the lyrics of both songs are included in this post). The “real estate” refers to the mind and what has taken residence with the mind.

Lyrics of “Kill The Ghost” by little image
Shapeshifter
Giving up a part of me
That no one needs to know
Mind drifter
In and out of dreams of what
I've lost and what I hold

I'm always looking back
Running out of slack
Reaching for the rope
So what's it gonna take?
To find a way to cut the cord and let it go

We can float away
Or kill the ghost
That haunts the part of me
That needs control
At 30,000 feet
I can finally see
That I'm never gonna change
If I'm always in the way
Never gonna change if I don't
Cut the cord and let it go
Let it go

Cold shiver
Treading in the water
When I need a hand to hold
Light giver
Dancing with the shadow that
You painted on the wall

Flicker in the night
Maybe I'm alright
Reaching for the rope
So what's it gonna take
To find a way to cut the cord and let it go

We can float away
Or kill the ghost
That haunts the part of me
That needs control
At 30,000 feet
I can finally see
That I'm never gonna change
If I'm always in the way
Never gonna change if I don't
Cut the cord and let it go
Let it go
Cut the cord and let it go

Never gonna change if I'm always in the way
[Repeating]

Always in the way never gonna change
{Repeating]

We can float away
Or kill the ghost
That haunts the part of me
That needs control
At 30,000 feet
I can finally see
That I'm never gonna change
If I'm always in the way
Never gonna change if I don't
Cut the cord and let it go
Let it go
Cut the cord and let it go

Lyric of “Real Estate” by little image
Is this a game?
Pull me out the frame
Nothing's quite the same
I'm thinking 'bout how I could start again, again, again, again

I get at it all day ('Cause I'm a runaway)
I'm feeling like a dog stray (I'm on the interstate)
'Cause I tried to tell you
Don't lose it all to give yourself a name

What do I say?
When the sun falls, it fades
So I walk the long way
Giving myself a break
Look at this place
It's taken up my real estate
See through all the pain
Does it glow for a change?
Does it glow for a change?

Isn't it strange?
Thoughts inside a cage
And you try to rearrange
I'm thinking I'll stay inside again, again, again, again

I could at it all day ('Cause I'm a runaway)
I'm feeling like a dog stray (I’m on the interstate)
'Cause I tried to tell you
You'll lose it all to give yourself a name

What do I say?
When the sun falls, it fades
So I walk the long way
Giving myself a break
Look at this place
It's taken up my real estate
See through all the pain
Does it glow for a change?

(See through all the pain)
Does it glow for a change?

“That’s Life” by Dead Dads Club – A Song Feature

Dead Dads Club single “That’s Life” isn’t motivational, but it is anthemic and it lends itself well to crowd involvement when performed in a concert venue. The band vocals of the chorus invite audience participation. The lyrics are included at the bottom of this page. The song is not about “living life to its fullest;” instead, it’s about accepting the realities of life.

That’s Life” is one of eleven tracks from the self-titled debut album of Dead Dads Club. They are a UK-based band driven by Chilli Jesson, who was previously with Palma Violets. At the age of 14, Jesson lost his father to a drug addiction – thus, the explanation of the band’s name.

The debut album was produced by Carlos O’Connell of Ireland’s Fontaines D.C. Looking at the credits available on Tidal, the other major contributors to “That’s Life”  are Rupert Greaves (guitar, vocals), Luciano Cusack (bass, backing vocals), James Stirrat (guitar), and Jamie Howard (percussion).

Lyrics of “That’s Life” by Dead Dads Club
She tells me everything is made by design
Same hymn sheets line for line I'm uninspired
By joy rides in slashed tires
Never one to wait a lifetime

He tells me, every page is blank as it's white
Step cautiously for every act has its own desire
With felt sides and cash prize
Never been the lottery type

And I don't mind

That life's gonna cause you trouble
It's what wе do to survive
In light of the human struggle
You'vе got the will to survive
Yeah, that's life

Dark thoughts tell me everything I've known is a lie
Conspiracies grip the nation's screens, override
I don't know who to believe this moment in time

This job pays me
But I'm feeling high and dry
Dread fills me
Every time I'm toeing the line
They say it pays but it's the same thing every night

And I've grown tired

That life's gonna cause you trouble
It's what we do to survive
Dear life of peculiar struggles
We've got the will to survive
Well, that's life
And that’s life

Too late to waste
Another slice of sunlight
They say it pays
It's the same thing every night

That's life
That life's gonna cause you trouble
It's what we do to survive
Dear life of peculiar struggles
We've got the will to survive
Well, that's life
Well, that's life
And that’s life
That’s life
That’s life

“One More Time” by Lone Tells – A Song Feature

While the acoustic arrangement is inviting and the lyrics are both intelligent and heartfelt, the defining strength of “One More Time” lies in its harmonization. The vocal layers do more than shape the engaging melodies—they feature a multidimensional texturing that sets the song apart from our other song recommendations.

At the start of the single from Lone Tells, the vocal layers blend into a unified and peaceful harmony, evoking the warmth and reverence of a church choir. Later, the emotions of the voices diverge, adding a second dimension to the harmony.  At times, the emotional difference is subtle, but readily apparent. But it’s most striking around 1:18, when the “backing” vocal adopts a pensive nature. “One More Time” is a track that will withstand “the test of time,” as repeated listens reveal new interests, especially when focusing on the dynamics of the lead and backing vocals.

The instrumentation is driven by acoustic guitar that shares characteristics of elegance with a harp. The percussion lives in the lower frequencies, sometimes light and other times with a force that contrasts with the gentleness of the melody. Lone Tells end “One More Time” with a do-it-yourself feel, as there is a sound similar to laying down an instrument following completion of a song. The sound occurs after the melody ends, leaving little doubt that it was left intentionally.

Lone Tells is an English-language singer and musician from Ukraine. He explains:
My new song is about loss and longing for what is dear to us, about our loved ones and the people we hold close. The song speaks about how unprepared we are to accept parting with someone or something that truly matters to us. From the very first sketches to the final version, the song took a little over a year to complete.”

The lyrics are included at the bottom of this post. When asked about the mention of “Bother Way,” Lone Tells said:
“That line is somewhat metaphorical. I created a kind of street and called it Bother Way. It’s that restless road on the street that leads to peace, a sort of fictional location, a personification of a departing path. To walk along it means to die, to leave this life. And the line ‘Someone has to go in a Bother Way on me’ means that when those dear to us leave, they pass, in a way, through us, leaving a mark forever.”

Finally, regarding the motivation for “One More Time,” he shared his story about losing his grandmother and his dog, as well as experiencing a stress-induced temporary loss of hearing in one ear:
“The thing is, work on this track went on for about a year. I started it in October 2024, when my grandmother was seriously ill. Then I continued working on it in December 2024, when my grandmother passed away from her illness. After that I went through a lot of stress, and because of it I lost hearing in one ear for a little over 30 days in January. After that, I kept coming back to this song from time to time. At the beginning of this year, my dog died. And I found the strength and the emotions to finally finish this song.”

One More Time” by Lone Tells

Lyrics of “One More Time” by Lone Tells
Oh I need you one more time
Oh my love survives
Oh I need you one more time
Oh we're living our lives

Someone has to go in a Bother Way on me
One more one more time when it feels get enough of time
I waste time around the day.
Everything is walking by
Almost gonna leave my tries to something try

Oh I need you one more time
Oh my love survives
Oh I need you one more time
Oh we're living our lives

“Sonder Life” by Tender Glue – A Song Feature

“Sonder Life” possesses the ability to reflect a listener’s temperament and emotional state—whether restless or at peace. Although “chameleon” is often a word of suspicion in business or politics, in music it’s a virtue: the art of adapting not to deceive, but to resonate with - and sometimes gently reshape - the current “inner environment” of the person. The guitars in “Sonder Life” are masterfully layered by Tender Glue, casting an ambience that is at once warm and quietly unsettling –an atmosphere that accommodates contrasting responses, even from day to day.

Additionally, the lyrics (included at the bottom of this post) of “Sonder Life” are open to interpretation. For example, the first two lines are “Running uphill when sober // I always knew I’m broken.” Certainly, not emotionally upbeat. But “sonder” is the profoundly mature realization that every other individual is living a life that is as complex and vividly real as your own. Tender Glue explains:
“’Sonder Life’ is an introspective track inspired by discovering the meaning of the word ‘sonder’ - the realization that everyone carries their own inner world and quiet struggles. Over the past decade, this awareness has become a recurring feeling for me, bringing a sense of nostalgia that’s hard to place. The song reflects on feeling nostalgic not just for the past, but for lives already lived and lives yet to come. With a reflective tone and emotional simplicity, the track captures the weight of perspective, empathy, and quiet acceptance.”

Tender Glue is the project of Tom Gluewicki, who was originally born and raised in Poland and later moved to New York in 2002. But Gluewicki describes Tender Glue as “Not a person. Not a band. Music made by an urge to create.”

“Sonder Life” is available for streaming or purchase via all of the major platforms, including Bandcamp (https://tenderglue.bandcamp.com/track/sonder-life).

Lyrics of “Sonder Life” by Tender Glue
Running uphill when sober
I always knew I’m broken

And I thought that you are kind
It’s just a sonder life

Trying to build what’s falling
Keeping my eyes it’s coming

And I thought that you are kind
It’s just a sonder life

And I hope you know I’m fine
It’s just a sonder life

“Doe Under Headlights” by MAX THREAT – A Song Feature

It’s a song that begs for dissection. And for bloggers, it is easy to accommodate because there is a lack of information about MAX THREAT to convey to readers. During the initial encounters with “Doe Under Headlights”, the shimmering guitar that first emerges after only 15 seconds is the crowd-pleaser. Later, there are the unexpected shifts, such as the guitar characteristics during the bridge at 2:15.

Like the instrumentation, the vocals are seemingly too antsy to sit in a single place. At times, the vocals in “Doe Under Headlights” take a relaxed storytelling approach. In striking contrast, there is an intense, high-energy delivery beginning at 2:44. Diversity carries risk. Admittedly, we weren’t fans of the segment having the intense delivery, at least not at first. But as we equated the segment with a similar approach in Grouplove’s “Tongue Tied,” proper appreciation arrived.

Lyrics of “Flowers In The Water” by The Boxer Rebellion
Every year you live it
No second thought is given
That this'll be the day that you die someday
But it won't be now
'Cause you're still too young
And everyone will tell you
Can't give into the worry
Wrap up in the love that you have
'Cause it may not last
Like you remember

Don't obsess be an optimist
The glass half-full is bottomless

Flowers in the water
Dead before they got there
The writing's on the wall
But you can have it all
Tomorrow isn't written
It's just subconscious visions of escape
An escape

I try to think of things
That used to make me happy
I guess a placeholder in time
A frozen image of
My nostalgia
But the poetry of life
Will quickly pass you by
Dreaming of the way that it was
You can't relive your past
Like you remember

And I saw the bloom rose-tinted
Don't let your dreams be your mistress

Flowers in the water
Dead before they got there
Writing's on the wall
But you can have it all
Tomorrow isn't written
It's just subconscious visions
Wilting in front of us
No thought of ever giving up

I gave too much thought to perfect
Too much looking at mirages
And I am lucky just to think it
Catch myself from falling

Flowers in the water
Flowers in the water
Flowers in the water
Flowers in the water

“you found sense” by Rome is not a town – A Song Feature

A current of tension and urgency flows through “you found sense.” The turbulence peaks with the Shoegaze-inflected Post-Punk fury of the final thirty seconds. Yet, evidencing the compositional skills of Rome is not a town, there are also flashes of finality, providing momentary relief and some resolution. Thus, at 0:54 (and again at 1:55), each guitar burst in a series of such bursts brings a brief pause in the tension.

Rome is not a town are based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The members are Kajsa Poidnak (vocals, guitar), Susanna Brandin (guitar, backing vocals), Emma Wättring (bass, backing vocals), and Anna Lund (drums). The “capitalization-challenged” band is preparing to release the album “echoes of love” on February 9, 2026. If interested, a review of their earlier single “golden fever” is available at CLICK HERE. The recent releases are via the band’s own label, Spirit Spirit Records, marking their new chapter of complete creative control and continued sonic exploration.

you found sense” is the third single from the upcoming album. This song “leans into a darker, heavier sound, with a clear nod to Post-Punk but without falling into familiar patterns. This release is darker, tighter, less about big gestures and more about pressure and tension.”

“The Storm & the Shelter” by Into The Afterimage – A Song Feature

From the outset, “The Storm & the Shelter” showcases vocal virtuosity framed by masterful production and impactful instrumentation. Still, it is only through the song’s powerful-yet-nuanced vocal and instrumental dynamics—each surge carrying greater resolve—that the full strength of the Into the Afterimage track is revealed. The arrangement balances grace with force, knowing when to hold back and when to strike.

The vocals caress the lyrical message of “The Storm & the Shelter”, although not always with a gentle touch. The instrumentation amplifies the emotion, repeatedly shifting between minimalism and commanding force. Delivered in the first person, the lyrics are an anthem of resilience, their self-assertive tone cutting defiantly against the weight of difficult surroundings. The second verse declares:
Hold me down, I get louder
Break me apart, I get prouder
Every scar is a crown in disguise
Watch me climb, watch me rise

The single by Into The Afterimage is described as:
A driving Alternative Rock anthem with a heavy R&B soul. 'The Storm & the Shelter' bridges the gap between commercial radio rock and the technical precision of the post-hardcore scene, but matured for soul-core approachability for all.
Featuring polished production and a soaring, 'arena-ready' chorus, the track draws on the approachable, groove-heavy sound of Gold Necklace mixed with the darker, cinematic intensity of Anberlin but updated digital production of Two Feet. No screaming, just driving riffs, intricate math-rock influences, and a vocal hook designed to stick in your head instantly. Perfect for 'High Energy,' 'Gym,' and 'Alternative Focus' playlists."

Into The Afterimage is based in Vancouver, Canada, with Ryan Vander Werff providing the driving force. RJay Dalton delivers the vocals. The project is scheduled to release an album on March 6. The album can be pre-ordered via various platforms at https://offstep.link/177093099499.

The Storm & the Shelter” by Into The Afterimage

Lyrics of “The Storm & the Shelter” by Into The Afterimage
Soft light, heavy heart, but I still rise

Hand in hand, feel the weight of the room
Carryin’ the pressure but I still push through
I’ve drowned in the silence, I’ve broken the chains
Still sing through the chaos, still rise through the strain

Hold me down, I get louder
Break me apart, I get prouder
Every scar is a crown in disguise
Watch me climb, watch me rise

I’m the storm and the shelter, the truth and the lie
When I sing it feels holy, when I scream it feels high
Ooooh, untamed, unstoppable
My pain turnin’ lyrical
I’m the storm and the shelter, the soft and the steel
Every note that I’m givin’ make the whole room kneel

Tears taste bitter but they still feel strong
Every cut that I’ve lived makes me carry the song
If the night tries to bind me, I’ll tear it apart
My heart on display, with a blade for the art

Oooh, break silence into thunder
Oooh, my voice pull the heavens under
Oooh, rise higher when I’m torn asunder
Oooh, power and the pain in one number

I’m the storm and the shelter, the truth and the lie
When I sing it feels holy, when I scream it feels high
Ooooh, untamed, unstoppable
My pain turnin’ lyrical
I’m the storm and the shelter, the soft and the steel
Every note that I’m givin’ make the whole room kneel

soft light, heavy heart, but I still rise

I’m the storm and the shelter, the truth and the lie
When I sing it feels holy, when I scream it feels high
Ooooh, untamed, unstoppable
My pain turnin’ lyrical
I’m the storm and the shelter, the soft and the steel
Every note that I’m givin’ make the whole room kneel

soft light, heavy heart, but I still rise
