The Ninth Wave and Swimm - Free Saturday (“FL&R”)

Finding songs that can be legally downloaded is easy. The difficult task is to find legally downloadable music that we recommend. Our plan is to post at least one Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) song each Saturday.

The Ninth Wave was originally the duo of Haydn Park-Patterson and Amelia Kidd. They are now joined by Kyalo Searle-nbullu (synths) and Calum Stewart (drums, synth). Haydn explains their latest release:
"Happy Days! is a song of ups and downs. At its core, the lyrics shine a torchlight on the murky highs and lows of life. We wanted to make something harsher and more direct than songs we had written before, and this came together relatively quickly. The flow of the song really captures what we were trying to get across with the lyrics: there's a rumbling undertow throughout the whole song, interspersed with ethereal ambient sections and culminating in big nasty crushing beats. We were all agreed that this should be the first song from our new EP to let people hear, and hopefully they're not frightened away.”

“Souvenir” is 7 years ago, but we recently bumped into the song from Swimm.  Twice, we grabbed an opportunity to see Swimm in concert. The first time was at an all-too-small venue in San Francisco and the second was at SXSW 2016. Both experiences were positive ones. The core of Swimm is the duo of Chris Hess and Adam Winn. The picture shows the harmonica during the performance of “Souvenir.”

Blue October Single Releases

2020 is a busy year for Blue October, despite the interruption of the band’s tour. Their documentary, “Get Back Up,” is nearing its date for distribution. The documentary covers the band’s successful launch, the all-too-soon return to earth, and frontman Justin Furstenfeld’s struggles with mental health, drugs, and thoughts of suicide. Now, Blue October is focused on a September release of the album “This is What I Live For.”
Justin Furstenfeld says of the album’s title track, “This song saved my life; this song is everything to me.”

Lyrics of “This is What I Live For”
It's what I live for
Falling on top of my head
Caught in a landslide
(Tumbling down again)

Part of me just dies
Peeling me out of my skin
Caught in a landslide
(Falling down again)

This is what I live for
This is what I live for
(Falling down again)

I'll never look back
Over my shoulder again
It's what I live for
(Falling down again)

Part of me just dies
Peeling me out of my skin
Caught in a landslide
(Falling down again)

This is what I live for
This is what I live for
(Falling down again)

I have to find a way
To make sure that you're okay
But no one answers me

I walk around
This lonely city

I walk around this lonely city
To make sure that you're okay
But no one answers me
Cause no one hears at all

This is what I live for
This is what I live for
(Falling down again)

This is what I live for
This is what I live for
(Falling down again)

I'll never let go

This is what I live for
(Falling down again)

I'll never look back
Over my shoulder again
It's what I live for
(Falling down again)

Blue October's single “Oh My My” will also be on the album, “This is What You Live For.” An anthem about the animal attraction from opposite sides of the tracks, “Oh My My” captures that magnetism and lets it loose inside a bottled-up and uncontrollable primal love song (“Girl, you get me high / Yeah, you’re my type / You’re danger danger.”). “These songs on this album should make you want to fall in love with somebody, or miss somebody, or want to do something outrageous with your life,” says Justin Furstenfeld.

Lyrics of “Oh My My” by Blue October
You have black hair I have blue
You look sadder than most girls do
The way you walk around
Always watching the ground
Well I like watching you

Your friends, they don’t like me
I think they’re jealous of my tattoos
I’m not a bad guy
Just like wearing black
I’m not scared of anything
But saying this to you.

It’s going down, neither of us want to be alone right now

Oh My My
Yeah I’m loving all your warning signs
Cause I'm sucker for your oh my my
Girl you get me high
Yeah you’re my type, you’re danger, danger

Yeah I’ll be waiting by the blacktop
Like a cigarette stain for you
Every day I just won’t go away
I’m not scared of anything
But saying this to you

It’s going down, neither of us want to be alone right now

Oh My My
Yeah I’m loving all your warning signs
Cause I'm sucker for your oh my my
Girl you get me high
Yeah you’re my type, you’re danger, danger

Oh My My
Yeah I'm sucker for the lonely kind
Because I’m loving all your oh my my
Girl you get me high
Yeah you’re my type, you’re danger, danger

I can
I’ll go anywhere you want me
You want me to
Caught my eye
Watch us free fall
Catch me, I’ll catch you too

I can
I’ll go anywhere you want me
You want me to
Caught my eye
And now we free fall
Catch me, I’ll catch you

Oh My My
Yeah I’m in love with all your warning signs
Cause I'm sucker for you oh my my
Girl you get me high
Yeah you’re my type, you’re danger, danger

Oh My My
Yeah I'm sucker for the lonely kind
Because I’m loving all your oh my my
Girl you get me high
Yeah you’re my type, you’re danger, danger

“Invisible” by Grace Davies - A Song Feature

We are violating self-imposed rules by posting “Invisible” by Grace Davies. The rule we are prepared to disclose, because it doesn’t sound elitist, is that posting should be based on the song, not the video. But the video of “Invisible” is powerful in its ability to work with the lyrics and the vocals. Empathy is the result.

In talking about the sadness of “Invisible, Grace Davies said:
“No happy ending, no glimmer of hope because that’s how I felt at the time. Every single word is the truth. My lyrics are like diary entries. Whatever I’m feeling comes tumbling out, however horrible. Writing that song was like therapy, I’d never written lyrics that raw before and as soon as I did, I began to feel better. I knew straight away I had my first single. I hope the song helps other people in the same situation as much as it did me. Share the sadness and move on.”

Grace Davies is from Blackburn, UK. She will release an EP later this year.

Lyrics of “Invisible” by Grace Davies
I don't wanna talk about it
There isn't much to say
I don't have an excuse to why
I won't come to your party
And I don't want my picture taken
I'd hate it anyway
No, I don't wanna spoil your night
Just go have fun without me

I'm pushing food around my plate
'Cause my father said I'm overweight
Well, maybe he'd feel better
If I just disappeared altogether and I
Got so good at faking smiles
I can do it for a little while
Just don't ask me if I'm okay
'Cause I'm not okay. No
It's hard to show you something invisible
No tears, no scars, no bruises, it's not physical
It's covered up and hidden tight
Beneath the skin, inside the mind
You wouldn't even notice, you wouldn't even know
Invisible, invisible, invisible

I don't wanna shout about it
Make it about me
'Cause they've already aired all of my problems on TV
Got everything I ever wanted, but nothing that I need
If anything it's just another reason I feel guilty

And I don't really cry no more
Guess I'm just used to insecure
Just don't ask me if I'm okay
'Cause I'm not okay. No

It's hard to show you something invisible
No tears, no scars, no bruises, It's not physical
It's covered up and hidden tight
Beneath the skin, inside the mind
You wouldn't even notice, you wouldn't even know
Invisible, invisible, invisible

I'm standing under all the lights
The focus of a thousand eyes
You wouldn't even notice, you wouldn't even know
I feel invisible, invisible, invisible

“Little Phoenix Baby” by Enola Fall - A Song Feature

Ingeniously, “Little Phoenix Baby” has a brief, slightly dark segment that divides two easily distinguishable but equally inviting energetic segments. For much of the single from Enola Fall, the instruments and vocal take an egalitarian approach, working toward the common goal of promoting bustle. Even when the vocals rest (1:30) and the guitar steps forward, there is a unity of purpose. But at 3:09, the brief divider signals a change. The final segment is again highly energetic, but the vocals turn to a chant mode and the guitar declares its independence.

Enola Fall is from Hobart, Tasmania, but they have also recorded and performed in Los Angeles, California. The members are Joe Nuttall (vocals, guitar, piano) and Mark Woodward (bass, vocals, woodwinds).

Lyrics of Little Phoenix Baby” by Enola Fall
Never was a stone
Feel I'm coming home
With no reason to mourn
I could be there by the dawn

And it never was easy
Or likely
Now you see me and now you don't
And you build your house to ride it out in
Until you won't

Every time it comes back
Takes a little more
Every time it comes back
Takes a little more

We are just birds
Birds that dream of the sky
We are out past the city now
And the lights have all gone by

With time repeating
Can't you see it?
I know you do
And everyone with burns still feels it
And I do too

Every time it comes back
Takes a little more
Every time it comes back
Takes a little more
Takes a little more

I think we're losing it [Repeating]
I think I'm caving in [Once]
[Repeating]

“Witness” by Mt. Joy – A Song Feature

In anticipation of their album release on June 5, Mt. Joy is systematically sprinkling Indie joy. The 13-song album is titled “Rearrange Us” and the latest single release is “Witness.” The song exposes a more serious and darker side of Mt. Joy. It is a profession of love, but the relationship has its difficulties.

Similar to the song “Strangers,” “Witness” showcases the prowess of Jackie Miclau on keyboards. But “Witness” is a skillfully build on the use of the keys. In fact, the first verse is limited to the voice of Matt Quinn and an acoustic guitar. When the second verse arrives (1:06), so do the keys, but without complexity. It isn’t until the two-minute mark that the full power of the instrument is unleashed.

In writing about the single, Mt. Joy noted:
“’Witness’ is out now. It’s one of our favorite recordings we’ve ever made. It’s a heavy tune, but there’s real redemption in getting to tell your story in song. It’s been amazing to see the response to it, and we can’t wait for you to hear how these songs fit into the record we made. Our producer, Tucker Martine, crushed it.”

The founding members of Mt. Joy have their roots in Philadelphia, but the band was fully formed and is now based in Los Angeles. The members are Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), Jackie Miclau (keyboards), and Michael Byrnes (bass).

Lyrics of “Witness” by Mt. Joy
Motion sickness and my paranoia pays the bills
Would you, would you be my witness
As the time flies past
And if you love it, write it down
If you need it, come 'round
Staring at America, and if I blink I'll drown

Cause when it gets heavy, I start actin' out
But this old love was all I ever found
It's like ooh…, mmm…

Can everybody see how a woman changed me
Does my darkness start to leak
Is it the heart in you to pardon me
That made me wanna stay
And do you love me right now
You need to come 'round
Tell me I'm the one that burned it down

Cause when it gets heavy, I start actin' out
But this old love was all I ever found
And I don't want anyone else’s love
In your arms, after love

I walked in on you
Horrible truth
I walked in on you
Who could lie like you

Shut off that stupid song
I should cut out your tongue
Shut off that stupid song
I don't believe what you've become, but
I'm ready to love you still
I'm living under your spell

Shut off that stupid song
I should cut out your tongue
Shut off that stupid song
I don't believe in anyone, but
I'm ready to love you still
Forever under your spell

I'm ready to love
