“The Storm” by FITUMI - A Song Feature

Today is “Super Tuesday,” a significant day in determining Presidential candidates. The day shouts for an anthem. “The Storm” shouts back. The song is by FITUMI, which is an acronym for Fake It Til U Make It.

“The Storm” is proclamation of readiness and fitness for the clash. But while the message is unchanging, the song isn’t confined to a high energy, passionate manifesto. The single even takes breathers, fittingly while providing notice that “I’m the calm of the eye / They don’t know what’s in store.” Particularly well executed is the crescendo of determination that begins around the 1:50 mark.

In explaining the motivation for the single, FITUMI noted, “This song was inspired by a quote I read, Fate whispered to the warrior, ‘You can not withstand the storm.’ The warrior shouted back, ‘I am the storm.’ At that period in my life, the quote really resonated with me. I had recently returned home from an Army deployment to a father recently diagnosed with cancer. I became his primary caregiver. He passed just a few months later, the day before my birthday, and the day my wife, who was 7 months pregnant with our son, and I were moving into a new home. A couple months later my son was born. I felt like fate was testing my merit with a lot of heavy life events all at once; telling me I couldn't withstand the storm. It was a rollercoaster. I was doubting myself but trying my best. I wanted to retreat into my vices, but I somehow managed to stay calm and persevere. I shouted back to fate, 'I am the storm.' It was out of those trials and tribulations that ‘The Storm’ and the entire debut EP for that matter, was born.

FITUMI is the project of Chris Smith, from North Carolina. “The Storm” is the third single from the upcoming debut EP, “Know Who I Am.” The single was co-written with Lauren Light and Wes Lauterbach and produced by Lauterbach and Zane Frye. Talking about the mission statement of FITUMI, Smith said:
"I wanted to make relatable music; music that would connect with people around the globe at any point in their life. I wanted to offer motivation to the kid struggling under the weight of peer pressure, the new parent trying to keep their head above water, the couple fighting to keep the spark alive, the college student facing decisions that will shape the rest of their life and to all those daring to be different and fighting for a better tomorrow. I also wanted to offer support and encouragement for those out here taking big risks and making big moves; not afraid to fail and dusting themselves off and getting back up when they do. This music and this project is for the everyday people fighting the everyday battles."

Lyrics of “The Storm” by FITUMI
This is a fight
To the death
Hurricane
Nothing left
It’s not just rain
It’s the demons that I’ve put to rest
But again
The funnel starts to spin
Rattling the doors
Now the front is moving in

I’m the calm of the eye
They don’t know what’s in store

This is the war

And in this war I am
I am the storm
And in this war I am
I am the storm

You can run
You can hide
As the flood
Starts to rise
I'm washing out doubt
Try to tread but it's a waste of time
In the end
You thought that you could win
Don't bother to rebuild
Cause I'll knock you down again

I’m the calm of the eye
They don’t know what’s in store

This is the war
(Begin chant: Hey! Hey!...)
And in this war I am
I am the storm
And in this war I am
This is the war
And in this war I am
I am the storm
And in this war I am
I am the storm

This is the war
And I am the storm
This is the war (This is the war)
And I am the storm (And I am the storm)
This is the war (This is the war)
This is the war (This is the war)

This is the war
(Begin chant: Hey! Hey!...)
And in this war I am
I am the storm
And in this war I am
This is the war
And in this war I am
I am the storm
And in this war I am
I am the storm
