We were invited to review the song “Steal You Away” by Gold Spectacles. The email invitation provided some background information. It’s not as much as we would prefer. For example, the email states that Gold Spectacles is a London-based duo, but doesn’t provide names. The duo’s Facebook page has a similar absence of names. Perhaps the mystery is part of the plan for drawing attention.
Gold Spectacles has only released the one song. Presumably they have more on the burner, since they were formed in 2012. Let’s hope the next releases are close to being as good as “Steal You Away.” Our favorite feature of the song is the blending of the female vocals with the instrumentation and the male lead vocals. The songs are certainly different, but the blending reminds us of what occurs within “Lights Out, Words Gone,” which is the best song from Bombay Bicycle Club. In both songs, the female vocals often sound slightly distant from the male vocals. In both songs, the female vocals are worthy of demanding the listener’s full attention, despite not being particularly demanding with respect to their level of difficulty (e.g., not a demand for a large vocal range). They are very different songs, with a similarity in reasons why they deserve attention.
