Kodaline timely shared a lyrically positive and melodically and vocally attractive single at a time when the music universe needed one. “Wherever You Are” develops an anthemic approach to defining the dimensions of a romantic relationship. Kodaline is not limited to a lone appealing voice. But Steve Garrigan is the lead vocalist, who explains:
“’Wherever You Are’ is a song about loved ones staying in your heart and mind even when they’re not with you. I wrote it specifically for my girlfriend as, due to being away on tour all the time, we never really got to see each other.”
The song puts the vocal skills of Kodaline on display. Garrigan’s voice is equally comfortable in the lower-octave verses and the greater-range demands of the chorus. Still, “Wherever You Are” would be somewhat less captivating if the voices of the other members were missing. The band is comprised of Steve Garrigan (vocals, piano), Mark Prendergast (guitar), Jason Boland (bass), and Vinny May (drums).
Kodaline is based in Dublin, Ireland. In addition to Europe, the band has performed in North America, Australia and Asia. In 2019, they totaled 283 million Spotify streams from 79 countries (exceeding a billion streams over the years). “Wherever You Are” is already a fan favorite in a live setting. Kodaline has been performing the single in concerts since at least July 2019 (Lollapalooza in Paris). It is the first taste of Kodaline’s fourth album, which is due later this year.
