“What’s It Gonna Take” and “Telephone Pole” by Colony House – Song Features

Colony House recently released “77 (Pt. 1),” a seven-track album featuring songs with a finger on the pulse of the present - socially satiric, politically awake, and existentially restless. “What’s It Gonna Take” intelligently lists a number of yet “Another” occurrence of unproductivity (for example, “Another lesson that we never learn”) and periodically asks “What’s it gonna take?”.

In comparison, the lyrics of “Telephone Pole” are insightful as they reflect upon existence. Thus, the song asks “Why am I afraid of an ending I already know?”. But the final line of the song suggests a path to some clarity:
Days turn to years and weave a tapestry
Stretched to the heavens and as far as I can see
All the shapes and colors blurred and undefined
Until I step away and watch them come to life

The lyrics of both songs are included toward the bottom in this post. The member ]of Colony House are brothers Caleb and Will Chapman, alongside Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell. “77 (Pt. 1)” is the fifth studio album of the band. Regarding the album title:
"77, the number,  means a lot of things to a lot of people,” Caleb explains. “Biblically, it’s the number of forgiveness. Spiritually, it represents completion or wholeness. For us, it's become a symbol of eternal perspective—a lens to look at love, loss, and life with a little more intention.”

We have seen the band three times and highly recommend them as a concert band. Pictures of the experiences are included in this post, evidencing our photographic weaknesses. The most intimate of the concerts was at Neck of the Woods in San Francisco, while the most powerful was at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, near the band’s hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. The other two opportunities to see their show were at The Fillmore. Colony House shared the bill with MuteMath at one Fillmore show. Interestingly, the song “Ready To Go” has the feel of a Muthmath influence.

While describing the album, which was released via LastDaze Records/Anotherland, the band explained
Sonically, 77 represents the no-nonsense, band-forward approach that mirrors the raw energy of Colony House’s live performance. Lyrically, it remains consistent with their past work. It is earnest and sincere but avoids taking itself too seriously. Themes of faith, forgiveness, and the journey through time run like power lines through the record. “It’s about looking backward and forward at the same time,” adds frontman Caleb Chapman. “We’ve always wanted our music to bring people together—and this
album is asking: what does that look like in a world that feels more divided and distracted than ever
?”

     The Album

Lyrics of “What’s It Gonna Take” by Colony House
Another gun in the hallway
Another march down mainstreet
Another bill that you can’t pay
Another school on the TV
Another war on religion
Another cut you can’t make
Another government decision
I said what’s it gonna take?

Another filled prescription
Another mouth we can’t feed
Another hard addiction
Another platform that we don’t need
Put your money where your mouth is
For everybody’s sake
Before we blow the whole world up
I said what’s it gonna take?

What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna take?

Another internet philosopher
Another еxpose
Another session with a counselor
To find peace in a dark place
Another lesson that we never learn
Another blessing we didn’t earn
Another curse that you have to break
I said what's it gonna take?

What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna take?
I said what’s it gonna take?

Another broken promise
Another trust betrayed
Another chance to have it all
Or throw it all away
If there's room for us to love
Then there's room for us to hate
Somethings gotta give
What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna take?
What’s it gonna?

Lyrics of “Telephone Pole” by Colony House
Life is like a telephone pole
And I'm a vehicle spinning out of control
Asking for a guardian angel or some kind of sign
To show me the meaning of life
And what all of this is for

One day is a blessing
The next day is a curse
One day I'm moving forward
The next I'm in reverse
But the daylight knows what the night forgets
Life as I know it now ain't life as I'll know it when

One day is a whisper
The next hits like a brick
One day it all feels certain
The next sinks like a ship
And the shadows hide where the sunlight ends
Life as I know it now ain't life as I'll know it
When I can see it

Life is like a patch of black ice in the night
A bolt from the blue of the sky
A split in the road
Why am I afraid of an ending
I already know?

One day is a blessing
The next day is a curse
One day I'm moving forward
The next I'm in reverse
But the daylight knows what the night forgets
Life as I know it now ain't life as I'll know it when

One day is a whisper
The next hits like a brick
One day it all feels certain
The next sinks like a ship
And the shadows hide where the sunlight ends
Life as I know it now ain't life as I'll know it when I can see it

When I can see it

Life is like a patch of black ice in the night
A bolt from the blue of the sky
A telephone pole
Like twists and turns that point to an ending

Days turn to years and weave a tapestry
Stretched to the heavens and as far as I can see
All the shapes and colors blurred and undefined
Until I step away and watch them come to life
