“When We’re Gone” by Amo Amo – A Song Review

The versatility of Amo Amo is on full display in its debut track. “When We’re Gone” ranges from an early delicate, distant sensibility to an invigorated bridge that is dispatched by a guitar riff and delivered by percussion. When the vocals rejoin at the end of the bridge, the track is a masterful blend of the dreamlike vocals and driving instrumental support.

Amo Amo is formed of five musicians from Southern California. The members are Omar Velasco, Justin Flint, Alex Siegel, Lovelle Femme, and Shane McKillop. We looked for the names of the members sooner than our usual pattern, because the voice of "Love" Femme reminded us of Ella Girardot, the lead vocalist of Arthur Beatrice, a UK band we hold in high regard.

“When We’re Gone” is the first release from a full length album that will arrive this year. Jim James of My Morning Jacket worked with Amo Amo to produce the album, which was recording in a house in Foxen Canyon, California. The promotional material regarding “When We’re Gone” asks:
“Why must mysticism be considered such a solitary practice — a spiritual union gained only through a single person’s transcendence? Why can’t mysticism happen en masse — some Big, Pop-Mysticism? Only with music has humankind been able to achieve this sort of communion. From the festival to the club to the drum circle, it’s the only place where a modern person can shed the human skin — all our worries, differences and debts give in to the beat, to the moment. It’s almost as if the music of Los Angeles' Amo Amo’s sole intent is to GET US THERE. Their instantly gratifying, euphoric compositions seem laser-focused on bringing a mess of humans into a space and getting them to move together like a single, pulsating organism.”

“What Now?” by Light Wheel – A Song Review

Light Wheel is an Austin-based band with a sound that is far more expansive than its numbers. Originally formed by Tyagaraja (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Evan Dunivan (guitar, synth, production), Light Wheels now includes Ethan Yeager (percussion), and Michael Sanders (bass).

Our best comparison to Light Wheel is the UK band Nothing But Thieves. The comparison is easiest to defend from the point of view of vocal range and power at upper registers.

     “What Now?” by Light Wheel

Lyrics of “What Now?” by Light Wheel
I told you once or twice
But you didn't hear
I can't believe the sound in my ears
Well what we doin' now?
I mean you and me
Without giving in to all of our fears

Staring down the mouth of hate
Wide eyed screaming love

We've come upon a time
In our lives
Where we have no choice but to unite
I dare to see the light
Between you and I
We'll never learn until we change from inside

Staring down the mouth of hate
Wide eyed screaming love

Hold on to each other
Live for the here and now

Well what we doing now?
What we doing now?
What we doing now?
Staring down the mouth of hate
Wide eyed screaming love...

Mighty Brother and Charlie Lane - Free Friday/Saturday (“FL&R”)

Free and Legal Downloads? Yes, at least temporarily. Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of their releases.  The end of an offer may be based on the expiration of a set period of time or on a limited number of downloads.  But at least for now, here are songs that qualify as Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) downloads.
Finding songs that can be legally downloaded is easy. The difficult task is to find legally downloadable music that we recommend. Our plan is to post at least one FL&R song each Friday/Saturday.
It is the start of the New Orleans Jazz Festival, so here is an Indie band that calls New Orleans "home." Quoting the band’s bio:
"Mighty Brother is a NOLA-based indie rock band captained by songwriters Jake Ryan and Nick Huster and crewed by a dynamic saxophonist, Jonah Devine Tarver, and airtight rhythm section, Kirk Duplantis and Quinn Sternberg. Since 2014, the group has charmed audiences with their infectious brand of songwriting, meticulous arrangements, and full sail quest for collaboration."

Charlie Lane is a singer/songwriter based in Melbourne, Australia. We would add “lyrically indelicate” to the description “Sweetly unique, charming and as down-to-earth as you can get, Charlie Lane's passion shows in music that streams from her very soul – but not without a quirky twist that makes her as entertaining as she is memorable.”
Her band members are Charlotte Saville (vocals), Trysten Ewing (drums), Lindsay Chapman (guitar), Beppe Abiuso (bass), and Ellie lamb (trumpet).

“Hits Me Like a Landslide” by Cathedrals – A Song Review

Cathedrals is a San Francisco treasure. The blogosphere was initially introduced to the duo’s brand of Synth Pop with the release of “Unbound.” The momentum was sustained with their following tracks, but Cathedrals is now positioned for acceleration. Brodie Jenkins and Johnny Hwin plan to reveal a new song each month for the rest of 2018. The releases are in conjunction with Soundcloud's "First on Soundcloud" Campaign, which features Cathedrals and nine other artists.

“Hits Me Like a Landslide” is among the new songs. It is Cathedrals' first single to place Johnny as the lead vocalist since “Unbound.” Still, the backing vocals play a major role. While the start of the song is a single voice, the beauty of the duo’s harmonization soon becomes attention-gripping. The track also includes a segment that permits Brodie’s voice to stand alone.

Lines within the lyrics of “Hits Me Like a Landslide” were lifted straight from love letters, which helps explain the strong sense of intimacy carried by the song. According to Brodie, who witnessed the relationship breakup that inspired the song, Johnny “exorcised the demons of that relationship with every line that he penned."

The on-stage pictures included in this post were taken during Cathedrals’ outstanding performance at the Treasure Island Festival in October 2014. This is a duo that can deliver beyond the reach of the processing of a studio setting. The Facebook site of Cathedrals notes that in a live performance, Brodie Jenkins and Johnny Hwin are joined by Mitchell Wilcox (drums) and Jonathan Hererra (bass and synths).

Lyrics of “Hits Me Like a Landslide” by Cathedrals
I got so used to being your lover
I can’t imagine you with another man
It creeps into my eyes
And keeps me up at night
When I think of you
Pierces through my heart
And touches on a feeling
I never knew

Don’t wait
[Repeat]

I got so used to being your lover
I can’t imagine you with another man
It keeps me up at night
And creeps into my eyes
When I think of you
It pierces through the skin
And touches on a feeling
I never knew

Hits me like a landslide
Hits me like a landslide
Two to the right
And a straight across
My face
Is feeling on fire
Hits me like a landslide
Hits me like a landslide
Three to the left
And a hook across my chest
This feeling's on fire
Hits me like a landslide
Hits me like a landslide
My face on fire
Hits me like a landslide {Repeating]
Face on fire.

This feeling's on fire
I got so used to being
So used to being
I got so used to being your lover
I can’t imagine you with another man

This feeling's on fire
It keeps me up at night
And creeps into my eyes
It pierces through the skin
And touches on a feeling
I know
I know I’m holding on
To something that’s been gone
For the longest time

My face
Is feeling on fire
Hits me like a landslide
Hits me like a landslide
Three to the left
And a hook across my chest
This feeling's on fire
Hits me like a landslide
Hits me like a landslide
My face on fire
Hits me like a landslide {Repeating]
Face on fire.

Don’t wait

“The Execution” by Tuarrah – A Song Review

Move over Rick Wakeman, you are no longer at the top of the chart of best songs inspired by 16th century British nobility turmoil. Does Billboard maintain that chart? While still with Yes, Wakeman released the solo album “The Six Wives of Henry VIII” in 1973. We have the vinyl version of the album; and today we added the digital version of “The Execution” by Tuarrah to our collection.

“The Execution” is art motivated by art. Pictured above is the work of French painter Paul Delaroche. The painting depicts the final moments of Lady Jane Grey, who was beheaded in 1533 after a nine-day reign as Queen of England. Full disclosure, we had to do the research on the Queen and the painting (CLICK HERE, if you are interested in a summary).

Tuarrah’s representation of the painting is equally artistic, as the vocals are passionate, the percussion is forceful without being demanding, and the other instruments are effective in enhancing the emotions. The genius of the song is in the presentation of the different perspectives of persons shown in the painting. “The Execution” begins from the perspective of the executioner, who stands with his sharpened ax. He is detached as he waits, but notes that Lady Jane Grey is more attractive when viewed up close.

After the chorus, the song takes the perspective of the man who is helping position Lady Jane Grey. He is compassionate, showing concern that the blindfold is in place and she has the comfort of the kneeling cushion. As he guides her hand to the block, he tells her that it will all be over soon.

The chorus repeats and the song moves to the perspective of the other attendees in the painting. They plead not to be forced to watch.

“The Execution” is the first of several new songs and videos that will lead to an LP release sometime in fall. Tuarrah is comprised of two multi-instrumentalist and a vocal magician. They are Charlie Van Kirk (vocals, drums, percussion, bass synthesizers…), Christopher Marion (vocals, guitars, percussion, piano, strings), and Julia Easterlin (vocals).

“Storm” by Mighty Oaks – A Song Review

“Storm” is masterful in its harmonization, its strings, and its percussion. The song is the title track of an EP from Mighty Oaks. The trio is based in Berlin, although no member is from Germany. Mighty Oaks is comprised of Ian Hopper (vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar, kick drum) from the U.S., Claudio Donzelle (vocals, banjo, guitars, mandolin, keyboard/piano) from Italy, and Craig Saunders (vocals, bass) from the U.K.

The Spotify version of the "Storm" EP is embedded in this post, since we are also strongly recommend the songs "The Dark" and "These Days."

Lyrics of “Storm” by Mighty Oaks
Some say I'm moving
From the wrong clock
That I'm lost
That I'm only reveling out
Got loose ends
Coming out

And if you close your eyes now
You can keep the world out
If you close your eyes now
You can keep it spinning around

When I'm lost in the woods
And the darkness is coming
The storm is all around
Can you hear me cry?
If I'm lost in the woods
And the darkness is coming
The storm is all around

Feels like I'm floating
Down the river
That I know
Twisting and turning
Well my head's gone down below

And if you close your eyes now
You can keep the world out
If you close your eyes now
You can keep it spinning around

When I'm lost in the woods
And the darkness is coming
The storm is all around
Can you hear me cry?
If I'm lost in the woods
And the darkness is coming
The storm is all around
Can you hear me cry?

If I'm lost in the woods
When the darkness is coming
The storm is all around
And can you hear me cry?

If I'm lost in the woods
When the darkness is coming
The storm is all around
And can you hear me cry?

Can you hear me cry?

Can you hear me cry?

“Killer” by Coleman Hell – A Song Review

Coleman Hell is the sole member in the category. Indie Obsessive appreciates production-driven singles, but normally leaves their reviews to bloggers with more knowledge about the genre and the required skillset. The exception is Coleman Hell. “Killer” is his third song that has compelled us to write a post.

Coleman Hell is a singer/songwriter/producer from Thunder Bay, Ontario. He is currently based in Toronto. Coleman exploded onto the music scene with the release of the banjo-sampling single “2 Heads.” Tracks such as “Fireproof” (with its harmonica sampling) and “Manic” (with its exploration of mental health issues) showed that the attention was well deserved. “Killer” maintains the momentum.

Coleman stated, “Writing ‘Killer’ was about capturing a vibe. I wanted to make something to soundtrack a late night.” Sign us up. The song has infectious energy, but is not afraid to jump tempos, including a downtempo “We ain't sleepin' all night.” The percussion in “Killer” heavily relies upon finger snaps, with the instruments more often functioning as the rhythm section than as the means for defining the melody.

     “Killer” by Coleman Hell

Lyrics of “Killer” by Coleman Hell (some “best guesses”)
I get romantic when my blood turns into alcohol
Killer, killer
Our love's a natural disaster
It's an act of God
Killer, killer

Killer, killer, killer
Killer
Killer, killer, killer

I just want you to stay naked all day
Show me why
You’ll be mine
Wondering all day
I say, ooh, baby, kill 'em
Ooh, ooh, baby, kill 'em
Killer, killer

When I'm watching you get ready for work
I pretend it's a spin
Tease in reverse
I say, ooh, baby, kill 'em, ooh, ooh, baby, kill 'em
Killer, killer

I got addicted to your kiss
It was a gateway drug
Killer, killer
My heart's in critical condition
When we're making love
Killer, killer

Killer, killer, killer
Killer
Killer, killer, killer

I just want you to stay naked all day
Show me why
You’ll be mine
Wondering all day

I say, ooh, baby, kill 'em
Ooh, ooh, baby, kill 'em
Killer, killer
When I'm watching you get ready for work
I pretend it's a spin
Tease in reverse
I say, ooh, baby, kill 'em, ooh, ooh, baby, kill 'em
Killer, killer

We ain't sleepin' all night
We ain't sleepin' all night
No
We ain't sleepin' all night
Killer, killer, killer

Killer, killer, killer
Killer
Killer, killer, killer
