Leon of Athens – From the Indie Obsessive Mailbox (Part II)

So, you are like us because you enjoy band choirs. Then, you’ll enjoy “(To The) Children of Tomorrow” by Leon of Athens. And you are like us because you enjoy a band shout or two, like the Lumineers shouts. Well then, you’ll really enjoy “(To The) Children of Tomorrow.” And if you enjoy horns and strings in your Indie music, you’ll love the song, as we do.
Leon of Athens is based in Greece (Yes, it seems obvious, but…). According to the email invitation from the band:
“Leon of Athens releases “Global,” the first track from his forthcoming debut UK album, on April 7… This indie pop track brings together elements of electro and acoustic tones, as folk, pop and rock come together to paint your world in musical colours.  With the album set to follow in June this year, Leon's vibe is upbeat and euphoric, with a social awareness running throughout.”
The members are Leon Veremis (vocals),  Mike Park (drums), Emma Williams (keys), Lefteris Volanis (guitar), and  Iraklis Theocharopoulos (bass).

Gold Spectacles - From the Indie Obsessive Mailbox (Part I)

We were invited to review the song “Steal You Away” by Gold Spectacles. The email invitation provided some background information. It’s not as much as we would prefer. For example, the email states that Gold Spectacles is a London-based duo, but doesn’t provide names. The duo’s Facebook page has a similar absence of names. Perhaps the mystery is part of the plan for drawing attention.
Gold Spectacles has only released the one song. Presumably they have more on the burner, since they were formed in 2012. Let’s hope the next releases are close to being as good as “Steal You Away.” Our favorite feature of the song is the blending of the female vocals with the instrumentation and the male lead vocals. The songs are certainly different, but the blending reminds us of what occurs within “Lights Out, Words Gone,” which is the best song from Bombay Bicycle Club. In both songs, the female vocals often sound slightly distant from the male vocals. In both songs, the female vocals are worthy of demanding the listener’s full attention, despite not being particularly demanding with respect to their level of difficulty (e.g., not a demand for a large vocal range). They are very different songs, with a similarity in reasons why they deserve attention.

“Unbelievable” by Starar – A Song Review

Starar knows the right combination for getting our attention. First, one of the members “liked” our Facebook page, which triggered an automatic notification to us. But more importantly, Starar submitted a song that we like.
“Unbelievable” is a combination of soft-spoken vocals and mixed instrumentation. The song is consistent with the following description, which is included in the bio of Starar:
“When we put a set of songs out there, the feedback would always be tremendous, but you still have to develop a sound that is both unique as well as contemporary to your audience. If you want to build that audience, you have to try new things to keep people interested.”
Within “Unbelievable,” rather than at a set of songs, the contemporary aspect is primarily in the vocals, while the “uniqueness” of the band’s sound is primarily in the mixing. Particularly in the final minute, the mixing provides a choppiness that is not so significant as to disrupt the melodic feel of the song, but does set the sound apart from the norm.
Starar is formed of siblings Jenna and Steven Starar, who are based in the U.K. (London and Lincolnshire). The two combined their talents in the writing of “Unbelievable.” The Soundcloud page for the "Unbelievable" identifies the instrumentation as being provided by Steven (Drums, Bass Guitar, Korg M1, Keyboards, and Saxophone) and Jenna (Vibraphone and Guitars).
