“The Mountain and The Wave” by Third Girl From The Left - A Song Feature

“The Mountain and the Wave” is twenty-first century Doors, with a female Jim Morrison. The lyrics are intelligent and poetry-influenced, the song’s persona harbors darkness, and the flow is artistically uneven.

Third Girl From The Left was born in South Devon, England. Her music is accurately described as a mix of avant pop and alt-folk rock melodrama. She says that “The Mountain and the Wave” was inspired by the little-known Greek myth Tyro:
“I discovered the story through an artwork by Scotland's Margaret MacDonald. It tells the story of a married woman racked with desire for the river god Enipeus, but is tricked and seduced by a disguised, lust fueled, Poseidon. For me it explores the power of addiction and how taking back that power must come from within.”

Lyrics of “The Mountain and The Wave” by Third Girl From The Left
Poor wounded woman
How could she resist?
Consumed by a hunger
That clung to her lips

Pulled by a line
That was drawn in the sand
She gave into something
She could not have planned

Persistent, the distance, the danger, the thrill
A flicker ignited a battle of will
She made for the shoreline
Breathed in resigned

As she parted her mouth
So the poison entwined

No, No, No Tyro
No, No, No Tyro
No Tyro, Tyro

Who was the mountain?
Who was the wave?
Twisted and reckless
Did not wish to be saved

Fighting for solace
Consumed by the force
Run deep, wide and open
Let the river take course

Now the heat kept on rising
The cool waters soothed
Resistance was futile
There was nothing she could do

And then from the summit
Release from within
Unveiled the stranger shook
Watery skin

The demon was dead.
The demon was dead that lived inside her head
[Repeating]

The demon was dead that lived inside her head
