modernlove. seamlessly shifts among
various tempos and intensities, similar to a feather floating atop a river with
closely spaced rapids and eddies. The analogy to the feather’s travel is best
understood starting at the 2:38 mark of “Us,” when the song from modernlove. fluidly
slows and allows a short rest, which proves to be helpful because it leads to a
powerful crescendo (feather acceleration). That short rest qualifies as a
combination of the Psychedelic and Dream genres, while the crescendo that
follows is more aligned with Pop Rock sensibilities (with the emphasis on
Rock).
Our favorite aspect of the song is the
sense of urgency in the guitar during the final minute of “Us.” It generates an
energy that radiates to the listener and that is inconsistent with the
love-gone-sour message of the song. In explaining their single, modernlove.
said:
"'Us' is actually the first tune we ever
wrote together. It’s such a raw song in every sense of the word: the energy,
the lyrics, the production. It’s the blueprint for how we write music as a
band. Once we wrote that song something clicked with us. There’s something
weirdly romantic about it even though it’s a break-up tune, it’s hopeful and
uplifting. That push and pull is something that has come to define our teens
and early twenties, and we just love the idea of a raucous crowd singing along
even though it’s a sad song."
The band is based in Drogheda, Ireland.
The members of modernlove. are Barry Lally (vocals, guitar), Daniel Rooney
(bass, synth), Graham Fagan (guitar, synth), and Cian McCluskey (drums). “Us”
was released via Akira Records. We agree with the press materials that describe “Us” as having a galloping pace and shimmering guitar hooks that showcase modernlove.
as a band emerging on the scene with a clear vision and determined attitude.

Lyrics of “Us” by modernlove
Before you know
We’ll be living in sin
Well, before you go
You wanna get one last kick in?
A few months ago
Forget the clubs
Cause babe tonight, we’re staying in
You kiss my collarbone
Was it I?
Was it I?
Left those impressions on your chin?
Love
What have we done to us?
Love
What have we done to us?
And just down the road
Don’t bother calling while I count the lights
You’ve felt the pain in the back of my head
Like how can she tell I’m no longer vexed?
And bеsides, I never hеar you
Beneath the din of my distress
And you say you wanna kiss me now
Well in fact
Well in fact
Well in fact I’ve never wanted to less
Love
What have we done to us?
Love
What have we done to us?
Love, is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie, love?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie, love?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie, love?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie?
Is he gonna lie?
Love
What have we done to us?
To us, to us
Love
Oh, baby
What will we do?
Love
Love
Before you know
We’ll be living in sin
Well, before you go
You wanna get one last kick in?

What have we done to us?
