“Once” by The Lunar Keys – A Song Feature

 

     The intro is short but powerful. The initial 11 seconds of “Once” feature thundering percussion and The Edge-esque (U2) guitar. The combination is attention-grabbing. At the opposite end of the single, it is the combination of male and female vocals that ushers the song to a close and further demonstrates the array of skills available to The Lunar Keys.
 
     The guitar and percussion remain a draw throughout “Once.” The guitar work during the instrumental portion that begins at 1:43 is particularly praiseworthy. The members of The Lunar Keys are Lexi (keys, backing vocals) “The Steve” (guitars, backing vocals), Dom (drums), and JC (lead vocals, bass). The band is from Surrey, which is just outside London.
 
      The lyrics of “Once” are included in this post. Our understanding is that the song is about an epiphany – “Once you have the vision / Your world will open up.” But like all well-crafted lyrics, there is room for personal interpretations. The Lunar Keys provide an insight that indicates the change is less sudden than the standard understanding of an epiphany. The band explains, “’Once’ is not a love song, it is a life song. Musically and philosophically it’s a journey from the loss of innocence to finally facing your fears with others and beyond.”
 
      The touches with The Edge might be understandable. “Once” was mastered by John Davis, who has worked with U2 and many other successful bands, including The Killers, Royal Blood, Pixies, and Lana Del Ray. On the production side, The Lunar Keys work with Billy Foster.
