The melody of the debut single from Keyside
sparks shoulder bounce, while the lyrics trigger a smile. The bounce begins after
an unconventional bass-driven intro. “Lights Out” is destined to be a concert
favorite, with its infectious rhythm and inviting vocals. But the smile arrives
with the attempt to accept the invitation to join the vocals. The lyrics are
not easily understood and the attempt to join is sometimes like watching
someone’s first effort at jumping into a synchronized line dance.
The
difficulty in interpreting the lyrics is at least partially a result of the
accent of the band from Liverpool. The explanation of “Lights Out” states that
the song is “delivered through a decidedly unapologetic scouse.” It also
describes the instrumentation as breezy guitar riffs alongside the punchy
presence of the drums.
The members of
Keyside are Dan Parker (vocals, rhythm guitar), Ben Cassidy (lead guitar), Oisín
McAvoy (drums), and Max Gibson (bass).
