“Care” by Davis Gestiehr – A Song Feature

The voice of Davis Gestiehr during “Care” effectively exposes the raw emotions of a relationship in need of repair. The lyrics (included below) begin by questioning the role of the protagonist in the relationship – “Do you need me to feel important?”. The vocals have a fluid and composed delivery of turbulent subject matter.

Yes, the vocals are strong, but the guitar riffs and hooks are the features that raise “Care” to the surface of the Indie Ocean. Better yet, the guitar playing reflects diverse influences. The solo guitar at the start reminds us of Blink-182 - somewhere between the intros of “Bored to Death” and “What’s My Age Again?”. Then, percussion ramps up the energy and a more aggressive, higher fidelity guitar enters. It isn’t until the 1:11 mark that a more powerful influence exposes itself, when a guitar channels Robert Smith of The Cure. The final seconds of the single from Davis Gestiehr are also noteworthy. One of the “brighter” guitar sequences of “Care” resurfaces as the ending approaches, and is followed by a single note that fittingly concludes the song. It is apparent that a significant amount of thought went into the writing and performance of “Care.”

The bio of Davis Gestiehr is interesting and informative:
Twenty-one-year-old, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Davis Gestiehr assembles the type of music that melds brooding rock and post-punk textures, creating a distinct, yet familiar wall-of-sound. Gestiehr continues to develop his song-craft while exploring sounds reminiscent of The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Replacements. 'Care' is an expansive artistic statement, which combines palpable pain and poignant songwriting, to produce a dark yet palatable landscape.

Lyrics of “Care” by Davis Gestiehr
Another night spent on the floor ...
Do you need me to feel important?
You only hurt those you adore …
And only preach love in the morning

Cause I know, I care too much for you …
Cause I know, I care too much for you …

Another night spent on the floor …
You only hurt the ones you love …
You say I could have given more
I say I’ve given you enough…

Cause I know, I care too much for you …
Cause I know, I care too much for you …

Are you really coming ‘round?
Are you really coming ‘round?
Are you really coming ‘round?
Are you really coming ‘round?

And I know, I care too much for you …
Cause I know, I care too much for you …
