The soothing reverberated vocals of Charlie Sztyk disguise the song's reflection on death, reckless driving, sleep deprivation, alcohol abuse, and a failed relationship. “Manic” even includes a voicemail message of concern for the welfare of the called party, similar to the start of Blue October’s “Hate Me.”
Charlie Sztyk (pronounced “Stick”) is from New Jersey. “Manic” is comforting, if the focus is upon the quality of the voice and the contributions of the instruments (prior to the final 20 seconds). The acoustic guitar in particular is quieting. When the focus is shifted to the lyrical content, the warm embrace of “Manic” is released, but the storytelling aspect is equaling attractive.
