Here are two examples of songs we enjoyed prior to seeing their “official videos,” but enjoy more after watching the videos.
Orla Gartland is a Londoner, but is originally from Dublin, Ireland. The attractiveness of her song “Inevitable” is partially a result of the shifting between minimalism and high processing. At the start, the song is stripped down, both vocally and instrumentally. Not far into “Inevitable,” the vocals undergo reverberation and are accompanied by Shoegaze guitar.
The video is about a couple who are no longer well-suited for each other. The father remains upbeat, the mother is less concerned with masking her attitude, and we learn during a piano recital that the situation has an impact on the daughter. During the recital, she plays and sings the lyrics of “Inevitable” – “This just isn’t fun anymore.”

The song “Nowhere” was featured a month ago. Since then, two events occurred. One, the video for the song was released. It has a simplicity that doesn’t get in the way of the beauty of the melody and lyrics. And two, while looking forward to seeing Flora Cash at the BottleRock Festival, we welcomed the thought of a last-minute substitution to Black Match. Of course, the substitution did not take place, and we were happy with the Flora Cash performance. Still, Black Match have a greater draw, at least for us.
In our May post, we noted:
“Nowhere” is melodically beautiful, vocally enchanting, lyrically intelligent, and compositionally masterful. The single from Black Match is best appreciated by putting “Nowhere” on repeat play and shifting your listening focus to a different aspect after each play.
Black Match is the vocalist-songwriting duo of Hannah Kenny and Ian Kizanis in San Luis Obispo, California. Lyrically, “Nowhere” describes the mental and emotional distress of losing a beloved. It’s not new subject matter, but the treatment is fresh. In the first verse, there is an analogy of the relationship to nicotine – “Got ahold on me like, like nicotine, you’re running through my lungs and into my bloodstream.” It may not be healthy; clearly the withdrawal is difficult. Then, the existential puzzling enters with heartbeat bass percussion, “Are we all just in the, in the in-between, longing to be heard and longing to be seen?”.
