The melodic vehicles vary in both style and elegance, but the journey through “Terrible Times” remains continuously appealing. During the initial 27 seconds of the song from Foreign Fields, the vocals possess a serenity, but with a tender anguish. The instruments are ambient, enhancing the feel. Then, “Terrible Times” steps into a second vehicle. The beats are hardened and accented, in contrast to the softness of the other instruments and the reverberated vocals. In fact, one of the most delicate of instruments, the harp, “appears” to play a role.
The elegance peaks three minutes into “Terrible Times,” when the song turns orchestral and choir-like backing vocals join. The song is skillfully layered. Then, in the final seconds, the song returns to its original serenity.
“Terrible Times” is a single from the album “The Beauty of Survival,” which will be released on Friday, March 20. Foreign Fields’ Eric Hillman and Brian Holl wrote and recorded the album during the Wisconsin winter in a back-to-basics cabin with no heating. In explaining the motivation for “Terrible Times,” Eric said:
"I began the first sketch for 'Terrible Times' the day my daughter was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). It began as a small message of love for her and everything that makes her special in my eyes. As the song grew it became more universal. A message of hope in the generations to come. Those youngest among us who may yet make the world a much better place."
