“When Nothing's Said” by Make Friends – A Song Feature

Make Friends shared an intelligently nuanced single with the release of “When Nothing's Said.” That’s apparent as early as the intro, when the vocals are muffled to represent private thinking. The lyrics (included below) of “When Nothing's Said” reflect the anguish that creeps through a person’s thoughts and imagination while staying quiet in the face of a distressing situation. The muffled thoughts are also heard during the outro – revealing that he can’t help but feel it, and doesn’t want to believe it.

Make Friends’ guitarist David Thomas explains:
“’When Nothing’s Said’ is about experiencing intense paranoia from the idea that your partner is being unfaithful to you, to the point that it’s making you think irrational and unhealthy thoughts. Despite the fact that these thoughts might ultimately stem from nothing, you can’t help but think of things differently to how you used to.”

The guitars in “When Nothing’s Said” often sacrifice melodic flow for ear-catching riffs. The attractive note-to-note leaps (often called “angular guitar”) are first apparent a mere nine seconds into the song (and then featured at 2:18). It is tempting to compare Make Friends’ guitar style to Foals, but with the accompanying power of the percussion, a better fit is the Math Rock band Mutemath. Turning to the vocals, our comparison is to the quality and intonations of Nothing But Thieves.

Make Friends are a UK band in Bristol. The members are Tom Andrews (vocals, bass), Max Lewin (drums), David Thomas (guitar), and Connor Crabb (guitar). The band’s record label is Funnel Music. Quoting bio information that we agree with:
Make Friends are a dynamic four piece dispensing progressive indie-pop, laced with infectious grooves, big-crowd sing-along chorus' and ethereal washes of glacial guitar - all driving forward their truly original big-stage festival sound… In the shadow of Bristol's musical heritage they grappled with new arrangements, complex grooves, stretched chords - inverting what they knew to hone and mould their truly exciting new sound.

Lyrics of “When Nothing's Said” by Make Friends
Oh, help but feel it
No don’t want to feed it darling
Oh, don’t believe it
Nothing’s gonna soothe you honey

Keep it locked up deep inside
In this repeating fixation in my mind
Now do I lose all this to hurt
Picturing myself as if I was in your skirt

And it’s when I fall asleep
These thoughts that I don’t need
Slipping when I speak
Can’t help but feel it, don’t want to feed it

Now I know I played my part
Keeping all my fears and thoughts left in the dark
You know I hate that I’m alert
Are you having way too much fun dressing in his shirt

And now it’s keeping me from sleep
These thoughts that you don’t need
Slipping when you speak
Can’t help but feel it, don’t want to feed it

We lose when nothing’s said
It’s creeping out of my head
What if we can’t go, what if we can’t go back

Ooo, help but feel it
No don’t want to feed it darling
Ooo, don’t believe it
Nothing’s gonna soothe you honey
[Repeat]
