“Bubblegum” and “Heavy” by Yonaka – A Band Review

“Bubblegum” isn’t your mom’s or gramma’s bubblegum. As a song categorization, bubblegum was music in the Pop genre. Like the product for which it was named, Bubblegum Pop was most popular with teens and pre-teens, was easily chewed, and provided little or no nutrition.

In contrast, “Bubblegum” by Yonaka has a maturity and sophistication. There are Pop elements encountered during the track, but “Bubblegum” isn’t interested in treading lightly so as not to offend the musical sensibilities of the masses. The song is edgy and includes portions that are powerfully aggressive.

The video for “Bubblegum” sent us hunting for the band’s tour schedule. The video shows Yonaka performing in a live setting. Each of the four members appears to have a strong stage presence. The lead vocalist (Theresa Jarvis) in particular is charismatic, as she uses her hip-hop style dance to secure a viewer’s attention. Much of the video is shot within a color setting that hints at being inside a bubblegum bubble.

“Bubblegum” drew us in the direction of the Brighton-based band. That’s when we encountered the song “Heavy,” which is the title track of Yonaka’s 5-track debut EP. “Heavy” is more melodic and less thunderous, but we enjoy the track for a different set of reasons. The track is hypnotic, particularly the vocals. “Heavy” courts the melodic sensibilities of the listener, rather than challenging them. Yonaka are not a one-trick pony.

The members of Yonaka are Theresa Jarvis (vocals), George Edwards (guitar), Alex Crosby (bass, keys), and Robert Mason (drums). Yonaka is named after the Chinese word for “midnight.”
