The band hasn’t reinvented itself after its leap into Indie relevance in 2014, but the music of Kongos has evolved. The strengths of this band of four brothers remain. Power percussion is still the backbone and infectious song energy is a constant. The magnetism of the vocals continues. The change: the South African roots of Kongos are less apparent now.
The rhythm section begins “Western Fog,” the most recent single from Kongos. The drums and bass combine to establish an invigorating tempo on which the synth floats and the vocals dance. Close to the one-minute mark of “Western Fog” a guitar grabs some of the spotlight. But the more aggressive instrument is the synth, which is the driving force in the final portion of the song, providing a melodic feel that will make Future Islands envious.
“Western Fog” is the lead single on “1929: Part 2” which is scheduled for release on October 1, 2019. “1929: Part 1” dropped earlier this year. The upcoming opportunities to see Kongos are:

Kongos are an Indie Rock band of four brothers - Dylan Kongos (bass and vocals), Daniel Kongos (guitar and vocals), Jesse Kongos (percussion and vocals), and Johnny Kongos (accordion, keyboard, and vocals). They are the sons of British singer-songwriter John Kongos. After grewing up in London and South Africa, the brothers are now based in Phoenix, AZ. The band launched an 8-part docuseries, “Bus Call”, which follows their story and gives a compelling and realistic window into life on tour. The brothers also host a weekly podcast, “The Front Lounge”, where they discuss music, ideas and more with guests that include other musicians, artists, touring professionals and entrepreneurs.
