“Carefully In The Dark” by Close Talker - A Song Feature

During most of “Carefully In The Dark,” the instruments collaborate in fashioning a commanding rhythm on which the seductive vocals shine light on a less than ideal relationship and become confessional during the second verse. The percussion on the song from Close Talker is the constant, with the other contributors to the rhythm enhancing the emotional feel and providing variation. Originally, a guitar (sounds acoustic), provides periodic strums, until an electric guitar enters with the first occurrence of the chorus (“But you are carefully in the dark…”). Exiting the chorus (around 1:10), a hint of rhythmic piano surfaces – a more subdued rhythmic piano than in LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends,” but equally attractive. Later, the bass is particularly appealing during the second occurrence of the chorus.

If “Carefully In The Dark” were to stay on the rhythmic track throughout its almost four minutes, it would be a strong single on the recently released album “How Do We Stay Here?” But the song gets stronger when the guitar temporarily jumps the track at 2:42, creating an aura of tension and urgency. After the song ended, we went to the tour schedule of Close Talker, hoping to find a local visit (nope, nothing scheduled yet).

Close Talker is a Canadian trio based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They are Will Quiring (vocals, guitar), Matthew Kopperud (guitar, vocals), and Chris Morien (drums, vocals). In a description of their album:
"How Do We Stay Here?", in a nutshell, is about trying to wrestle with time. It's about trying to learn from experiences, trying to keep perspective, trying to progress in this weird world, and sometimes trying not to progress at all; to sit in a moment and soak it in for all it has to offer before it becomes nothing more than a memory. "The album is us navigating through the past two years, through both the good times and the bad, and holding on to those times for as long as we're able" says the band.
