“Home” by Unknown Neighbour - A Song Feature

The title of the single from Unknown Neighbour identifies the subject matter of the song and signals the likely emotional response of listeners. “Home” carries a warmth, an intimacy, and a sense of being sheltered, much like a residence that has advanced into being a home.

The voice of Unknown Neighbour provides the foundation and structure. The other contributions play lesser roles than the lead vocals, but each has a calmness and comfort to increase the coziness of “Home.” The harmonica and banjo are instruments that are well suited for infusing energy into a song. However, Unknown Neighbour shows the other personalities of the two. The acoustic guitar establishes the melody throughout the song, and while the electric guitar is less permanent, it is strikingly effective in enhancing the sonic beauty of “Home.” The piano is almost easy to miss, but deserves praise.

Unknown Neighbour often includes a female vocalist in his songs. Happily, that is true of “Home.” We hope to add her name to this post when we find credits, since she significantly influences the vocal beauty of the single.

Unknown Neighbour is the performance name of German singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sascha Zemke. In November 2019, he signed with the Amsterdam-based Indie label Revanche Records.

The lyrics of “Home” are about the home you build on your own, no matter where you come from. Being asked about the story behind the song, he said:
“I wrote this song a while ago and I think it’s my most intimate one. The lyrics kind of summarize my music – my songs, my message, my artist name – but also me as a person. Writing, producing and performing ‘Home’ has been a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s a pile of hope for those who always had a room but no home. Music gives me so much strength and I hope that this song will do the same for some of you!“

Lyrics of “Home” by Unknown Neighbour
You’ve been brought up
In an unfamiliar town
And boy you got used to
Strangers and their frown
They brought you up
By holding you down
By holding you down

It felt so rough
To stand on your own
With no scope for
Somebody to moan
It’s been so rough
To have a room but no home
A room but no home

But you grew up and you swore
To add chapters of ease
May they cover your core
Like the rings of old trees

I will hold yours
And you will hold mine
I’m gonna hold yours
And you're gonna hold mine
[Repeat after bridge]
