“Unchained” by Devon Gilfillian – A Song Feature

     “Unchained” is an anthem that radiates a Bluesy Soulfulness. Yet, the extended instrumental outro injects elements that are more characteristic of a soundtrack of a Spaghetti Western (particularly Italian composer Ennio Morricone). It is most apparent starting at 3:28 of the single from Devon Gilfillian.

      Devon Gilfillian is a Nashville-based vocalist/songwriter. But he credits his upbringing in Philadelphia for shaping his writing. He writes to the “connective thread” from the musicians of his father’s era (Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, The Temptations) to the beats and rhymes of the more recent icons (Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West, Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z).

     An explanation of the video for “Unchainded:”

     At age 17, Ryan Gilfillian -- Devon's younger brother -- was in a severe car accident that left him disabled from the waist down. Shot in their hometown of Morton, PA, the "Unchained" music video is a day in Ryan's life, showing his will to live and love fully, despite any setbacks. Devon explains, “This song is about becoming the best version of yourself no matter what obstacles get in your way. My brother is a prime example of that. He doesn’t let anything hold him back from being his fullest self.”
