Blair Jollands delivers a soulful, cinematic, anthem-like curtain raiser for an LP that will arrive later this year. “Nothin' In The Pot” is the first single and expected title track of the LP scheduled to drop this fall.
The official video of “Nothin' In The Pot” is as cinematic as the song. The video has characteristics of an American Western, but was filmed in South American (Bolivia and Patagonia) and Europe (London and Spain). Blair Jollands plays the role of “The Perpetrator.”
During the chorus, “Nothin' In The Pot” is anthemic, as it provides motivation to “get back in the saddle.” But at other times, the song is more confessional, “I lost my way.” While talking about “Nothin' In The Pot,” Blair Jollands explained:
“This song is a call to humanity to think twice before turning to ‘life as normal’ after this current crisis. Our planet has been eaten alive by our chaos and our economic systems only encouraged continuous consumption. How shall we go forward?”
“Nothin' In The Pot” is about the crossroads we find ourselves at. How we go forward from this point will define us. We have to embrace the challenge using the lessons we have learned, to make a better world for all nations, not just the developed world. The new normal – the norm that emerges after this pandemic, has to be different, specifically when it comes to climate change.
Jollands' bio notes that he was born and raised in New Zealand, but now resides in London. He is a songwriter and composer, releasing several studio albums under his own name and his alter ego El Hula. He has collaborated with Gordon Rafael (The Strokes), Boy George and Madonna, and worked with legendary film makers such as Nicolas Roeg, Ken Loach and Richard Attenborough. His compositions are cinematic in scope and call to mind aspects of Morricone, Bowie, Bacharach and Beck at their heartbroken best. As well as an ear for lush instrumentation, Jollands brings his award-winning sound design skills to his music, incorporating found sounds and samples into his productions. Jollands will be releasing his 5th studio LP in the fall of 2020 via M.A.R.S. Label Group.
