“Somebody plug in the banjo, this one’s gonna be a hit.” Better yet, let’s mix digital samples with soulful vocals and interesting lyrics into a high energy package and call it “2 Heads.” Coleman Hell recently released a Folktronica track that is grabbing attention.
Coleman Hell is an artist based in Toronto, Canada. While “2 Heads” fuses Folk and Electronic, it’s not accurate to categorize his music as being along that line. In the EP release of 2014 (“VENA”), none of the five songs “brought the Folk.” Instead, Coleman Hell went into the genres of House (“Venezuela”), Funk (“Fortress” to a degree) and Hip-Hop (“All the Monsters” to a degree). He’s not a one-trick pony. But if he were, and “2 Heads” represents the outcome, the man has a hell of a trick.

Lyrics of “2 Heads”
There must be something in the water
And there must be something about your daughter
She said our love ain't nothing but a monster
Our love ain't nothing but a monster
With 2 heads
I turn to you, you're all I see
Our love's a monster with 2 heads and one heartbeat
I turn to you, you're all I see
Our love's a monster with 2 heads and one heartbeat
We just got caught up in the moment
Why don't you call me in the morning instead
Before we turn into a monster
Before we turn into a monster with 2 heads
I hope to God I'll love you harder
I hope to God I'll love you longer
If only I could live forever
If only I could hold you longer
Well I hope to God I'll love you harder
I hope to God I'll love you longer
If only I could live forever
If only I could hold you longer

Someone please explain to my boyfriend and I want this song is actually about. Because I think it describes our relationship very well and I wanted to be our song, boyfriend not so much. Lol. Someone please explain to my boyfriend and I want this song is actually about. Because I think it describes our relationship very well and I wanted to be our song, boyfriend, not so much. So I am asking the Internet here, what do you think the song is about?
ReplyDeleteLet me start with saying this is my favorite song. I really do wish this could be the song for my girlfriend and me.
DeleteNow, to me, this song is a break up song. They got into a fight, and she broke it off.
"There must be something in the water."
This is probably referring to some sort of alcohol, most likely vodka.
"And there must be something about your daughter. She said our love ain't nothing but a monster with 2 heads."
He's venting with someone (her dad?). He is saying that there is something wrong with her because she's calling their love a monster.
"I turn to you, you're all I see. Our love's a monster with 2 heads and one heartbeat."
(Here is where the romantic part is, a big reason why, I think, you'd want this song for you two.) This demonstrates how much he cares about her. They have 2 heads so they don't always agree but one heartbeat shows how much they are in tune with each other, at least to him.
"We just got caught up in the moment"
Here's the fight. People say a lot of things when they're angry, easily getting caught in the moment. It's not a good moment either as demonstrated by the next couple lines.
"Why don't you call me in the morning instead"
He wants her to sleep on whatever just happened. He doesn't want her to make a rash decision.
"Before we turn into a monster with 2 heads"
This time around being a 2-headed monster is a bad thing. There was no mention of their shared heart beat and he's trying to prevent it.
"I hope to god I'll love you harder"
He hopes he will be able to. He doesn't know if he can due to a seemingly imminent break up.
"I hope to god I'll love you longer"
He's really hoping to get more time with her.
"If only I could live forever"
This one is pretty open. A lot of people yearn for this but in context, it seems like he would want time to convince her to stay.
"If only I could hold you longer"
Here it seems like the break up happened or is about to happen. He is wishing he could have more time to keep her close.
So, to me, this is actually a pretty sad song. Of course I'm a guy though so I might just be looking at it through a negative view.
Not gonna lie - your interpretation is quite poetic. I love your insight.
DeleteThis is quite the take on this song. I would of never thought of it like this
DeleteGuys....monster with two heads is them having sex. When she says that their love ain't nothing but a monster with two heads, she is being demeaning and saying that their relationship just revolves around sex....break up or not, he thinks he is in love and she realizes the only thing their relationship is based on is sex. Now, calling sex/relationship a monster with two heads can be demeaning, hot, flattering, and sexy all at the same time!
ReplyDeleteA "beast with two backs" is the euphemistic metaphor for two persons engaged in sexual intercourse, not a beast with two heads. a beast with two heads could be referring to what one of the earlier comments suggested about how they have different opinions but they share one heart meaning that they are on the same wave length.
Deletecase in point....there must be something in the water and "call me in the morning before we turn into a monster with two heads" is him trying to explain/control his feelings...
ReplyDeletesomething in the water...inexplicable
ReplyDeletesomething about your daughter...to her parent/dad
monster with 2 heads...sex
call me in the morning before we turn into a monster with 2 heads...lets wait to have sex
I agree he loves her...she's in it for the sex.
Bah. Daughter caught them making the monster with two backs.
ReplyDelete*Beast with 2 backs. Same thing though.
DeleteYeah. I feel like he’s ripping off Shakespeare here. Going through all the excuses they use to justify sex but, finally admitting their relationship revolves around sex. Meaning it’s shallow and carnal. (Our love ant nothing but a monster with two heads) and wishing it was more than that (I hope to god I’ll love you harder).
DeleteLoving "2 Heads". The video for it takes the song to the next level! http://vevo.ly/I6o90U
ReplyDeleteHe loves her, but he wants her to take her time and think, before getting caught up in the moment and letting him give himself fully to her, heart and body. He doesn't want to get hurt.
ReplyDeleteMy sort of boyfriend played this song for me the other night. We have been seeing each other pretty steady for about a year. We have so much chemistry, we are like a freaking meth lab. But every time we get too close emotionally, one of us pulls back. We each have a lot of baggage and are actually kinda old. ;) Anyway, WTF is he trying to tell me here?
ReplyDeleteThat this is a good song and you shouldn't read into it. ;-)
DeleteDid anyone consider the possibilities that "your daughter" could be his lover's daughter? I'm not saying that that is what i believe, but i have considered that possibility. Also, he wishes he could live forever meaning eternal life. A lot of people will not agree with what i'm about to write, but i'm gonna put it in here to give another perspective because this is what i see; I believe this band is borrowing creativity from dark powers (demonic forces). They are a very talented band, but i sense they are channeling demons (either unknowingly or knowingly). Even with that being said, they CAN come to Jesus and repent. "Jesus is the way, the truth, and the LIFE" No one comes to God the Father except through him. Through Jesus, we can become sons and daughters of God.
ReplyDeleteHow are they channeling demons? Have you ever been to one of their concerts or been near the band? For all you know, the studio could be channeling demons. But the most logical answer is that you're a religious fanatic who's trying to preach.
DeleteAre you fucking high?
Deletethis song is definitely a song about breaking up or getting a divorce "there must be something in the water" thats usually an expression made when something similar happens to a lot of people/ a lot of people feel the same way. what i'm thinking is is that maybe she had a bad childhood like her parents went through a tough divorce or something and she might've said to him (coleman) "we will never end up like that" or something..so this history of tough breakups can "run in the family" so thats why he says "there must be something in your water" right before talking about "your daughter" like he doesn't feel the same but she's picking up on stuff that realistically isn't a big deal but because of her past they are.
ReplyDelete"our love is like a monster with two heads" what are monsters? scary..destructive..evil..etc. she's saying their love is toxic, maybe because they're fighting.. when he says back "i turn to you...you're all i see... our loves a monster with two heads and one heartbeat" he isn't trying to be romantic like someone else commented...instead it's almost as if he's trying to tell her that she changed..like they used to be on the same wavelength hence the heartbeat, but she's suffocating him now. instead of thinking that the first part "i turn to you, you're all i see" is him saying romantically that he goes to her for everything and he only ha eyes for her, it seems as if he's basically saying she's everywhere and not letting him breath. he follows it with a variation of what she said suggesting that he's still holding on to the hope that their relationship can be fixed and it doesn't have to end up like her parents' but she's done.
the "we just got caught up in the moment, why don't you call me in the morning" has the tone that suggests they may be engaged and she called it off. because if they were simply breaking up or getting a divorce a couple wouldn't be like "okay wait just a second, we got caught up in the moment but just think it over for a bit" if they were breaking up they would've and talked about it later if at all, if they were getting a divorce she would suggest it in a quiet time, not when she was "caught up in the moment" which coincides with the beginning line about "your daughter" bc when a guy is about to propose to his girlfriend, traditionally he talks to her father first and asks permission...this theory also goes along with the music video taking place at a wedding.
lastly, the part saying " i hope to god i love you harder" to the last line "if only i could hold you longer" is him wishing he could have the old "them" back, he wants his best friend (his girlfriend in the beginning of their relationship) back and it seems like they just fell out of love, more so on her end. by ending with "i could hold you longer" it's him accepting that he's lost her.
this song isn't happy, it's about him and her having a destructive relationship full of them butting heads. however, it wasn't always like that. he loved her and she loved him but she got scared probably thanks to commitment issues from her family, and built a wall between her and him through fighting. he knows this isn't the real her but there's nothing he can do; she's not ready to commit.
Do find you have a battle with finding a balance between happy music and telling a meaningful story?
ReplyDeleteI love serious music and not-so-serious music so equally that I kind of end up meeting in the middle. And I feel like, I’m not sure where the quote is from, but I remember hearing when your life is going well you’re listening to the music and the rhythm and the beat, but when you are going through some hard times maybe you’re listening to lyrics. And I think I’d like for my songs to be like multi-dimensional, have someone listen to it, be able to dance to it, but maybe if they are going through a break-up or things aren’t going right at home or something, they read a bit deeper and make it help them through a problem *Pay special attention to the last few lines of his answer... Read deeper and you should be able to see that this is not a happy love story, but a toxic one.
Someone please tell me the name of the actress in this video
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the absolutely worst songs if the decade. Terrible lyrics, horrible music. Total crap with no redeeming qualities.
