“Kills You Slowly” by The Chainsmokers – A Song Feature

Among their many skills, The Chainsmokers design high-powered musical vehicles that transport relatable observations of human behavior. Their single “#Selfie” is the vehicle that provided the duo’s initial traction, although it is something of a “clown car” that overflows with highly amusing, self-absorbed remarks.

The latest energized and energizing vehicle from The Chainsmokers is “Kills You Slowly,” which has a cheery exterior and a troublingly dark interior. That is, the single is melodically enchanting and lyrically bothersome in its description of a relationship. Fittingly, the song’s artwork is a vehicle that is ablaze. In the song, “he” readily admits to doing things he can’t defend (such as showing up late and drunk for plans involving her friends). Despite that, she puts on an act when they are with others, even her parents:
Hold it, even though it kills you slowly
Explosions, hidden when we’re in the open
Keep on smiling, until it’s over
Hold it, even though it kills you slowly

The Chainsmokers are Grammy Award winners Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. They started in New York, but are currently based in Los Angeles. In explaining “Kills You Slowly,” they said:
“We wanted to make a song that told a real sort of dark twisted story but the way you felt it and heard it was the complete opposite. The song’s production and melodies are very uplifting and vibey yet if you listen to the lyrics it tells the story of all the relationships we have been in that have turned toxic. Love that we become a prisoner of because of fear of leaving the other. It’s something we can all relate to and is a terrible anxious feeling but in this song, we give it this sort of positivity.”

The next tour by The Chainsmokers begins in September 2019. Among the stops is a San Francisco visit to the soon-to-be-opened Chase Center. The Chainsmokers recently made chart history by becoming the only band (not vocal group) to see its first three full-length studio albums enter the Billboard 200 at #1

Lyrics of “Kills You Slowly” by The Chainsmokers
Made plans with me and all your friends
I’m late again, I hate to keep you waiting

Tried to be a gentleman
Got drunk again, before I even made it

Tried to call a car for you
You’re tired of me, I knew you wouldn’t take it

You walked a mile in Louis Vuittons
And fucked ‘em up, you know that they’re my favorite

But we dress up and play pretend
Then we act like we’re good again
I do things I can’t defend
And even when you hold it in

Hold it, even though it kills you slowly
Explosions, hidden when we’re in the open
Keep on smiling, until it’s over
Hold it, even though it kills you slowly

Arguments that never end
You’re talkin’ shit, to spice up conversation

I’m so sick of back and forth
These fights with you are starting to feel contagious

Said that I’m no good for you
Right before we walked into your parents

Then you put on that smile again
And grabbed my hand, even though you hate it

But we dress up and play pretend
Then we act like we’re good again
I do things I can’t defend
And even when you hold it in

Hold it, even though it kills you slowly
Explosions, hidden when we’re in the open
Keep on smiling, until it’s over
Hold it, even though it kills you slowly

Oh but, but it it, won’t but, I said
You hold on, hopin’ it gon stop, but it don’t
Oh but, but it it, won’t but, I said
You hold on, hopin’ it gon stop, but it don’t

Hold it, even though it kills you slowly
Explosions, hidden when we’re in the open
Keep on smiling, until it’s over
Hold it, even though it kills you slowly

[Layered with the chorus:]
Oh but, but it it, won’t but, I said
You hold on, hopin’ it gon stop, but it don’t
Oh but, but it it, won’t but, I said
You hold on, hopin’ it gon stop, but it don’t
Oh but, but it it, won’t but, I said
You hold on, hopin’ it gon stop, but it don’t
Oh but, but it it, won’t but, I said
You hold on, hopin’ it gon stop, but it don’t
