“Youth” and “Air Runs Out” by The Wild State – Song Features

The music of The Wild State has a soft elegance and an adventurous nature. In their single “Youth,” the elegance is immediately apparent, as a piano establishes a setting suited for contemplation of serious subject matter. A distant, almost desolate trumpet helps maintain that atmosphere. The adventurous character is evidenced by the song’s vocals. The lead vocals carry a reassuring sophistication, while the backing vocals have the sound of autotune – the enemy of sophistication. It works! At 3:11, the trumpet leads to an attractive harmonization of a plea and an offer:
Praying for the dark to never leave
For the night to carry on
Your clothes are torn

Ever want to talk, just let me know
You don’t have to deal with him alone
My violet bird

The Wild State is not limited to a single dimension. Following a quiet intro, “Air Runs Out” ventures up tempo, particularly when compared to “Youth.” The tempo contrasts with the lyrical content, which the band explains is about “"the horrible process of love turning stale and about why we sometimes tolerate it for routine and security." The wait for the next release will not be a long one. The band will share “Lavender” on April 24.

The Wild State is a UK trio in Brighton. The members are Josh Difford (vocals, guitar, piano), Oliver Spalding (vocals, drums), and Laurie White (guitar, bass). From the strength of their initial demos, the band signed a publishing deal with IAMSOUND Music and recorded their debut album, “Light Along The Waves,” in Connecticut with producer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Kurt Vile).
