“The Shakes” by Bengal Lancers – A Song Review

Bengal Lancers does not shy away from tailoring serious subject matter into melodies that are uplifting. Following the 2018 song “Memory Loss,” the London band released another single that addresses mental health issues while dressed in flashy clothing. “The Shakes” has an infectious energy throughout, handclaps at the start, repeated declarations of “Can’t get out” in the middle, and a guitar-driven outro.

The members of Bengal Lancers are Harry Sullivan (vocals, guitar), Max Hutchins (drums), Charlie Hawkins (bass), and Aidan Wickham (guitar). Quoting content that we found interesting:
“’The Shakes’” is probably the first song we ever wrote as a group, but it hasn’t really aged,” explains guitarist Harry Sullivan. “If anything it was a bit ahead of everything else we wrote during that time. “On the surface, it’s about looking after a friend who’s had a bad turn on a night out: That moment of immediate clarity you have when ‘something isn’t right and I need to do something about it,’ but I guess it’s just about pulling people back from the edge when they aren’t feeling 100%.”
