“Outsider” and “Dunes” by Letrasets – Song Features

With each song release, a band must select the digital streaming format (or formats) for enabling listeners to access the song. Particularly for Indie bands that are attempting to increase their traction on the Indie landscape, Spotify is an easy choice. Spotify pays the band a small amount per play (a very small amount, but it can become meaningful). In comparison, Soundcloud and Bandcamp permit music lovers to stream the song at will, without compensation to the band. The advantages of these two free streaming formats are (1) users of the two formats tend to be more open to new music and (2) Hype Machine will only repost songs that are in the Soundcloud or Bandcamp format. The Hype Machine exposure certainly aids in getting songs to the ears of potential purchasers.

The Australian band Letrasets followed different paths with their songs “Outsider” and “Dunes.” In our opinion, “Outsider” is easily the better of the two praiseworthy songs. It was the first to be released, but it is “Dunes” that is bringing attention to Letrasets in the United States. We don’t think it is a coincidence that “Dunes” is the one that is accessible via Soundcloud. We don’t raise this as an argument that one path is better than the other. There are too many factors that play upon each other for us to recommend one path over the other. We are merely stating an observation that we found interesting.

Letrasets are a four piece group from the western suburbs of Adelaide. The members are Ben Williams (vocals, rhythm), Tim Kinsman (bass), Adrian Cecchin (drums), and Jack Leonard (lead guitar).
