“Suncats” by Hazlett – A Song Feature

“Suncats” showcases a varied landscape of individually praiseworthy features, where some sectors possess a calm pastoral beauty and others have been purposefully shaped by forces that will remain foreign to those of us without strong production skills. Originally, the individual features draw attention to “Suncats,” a single from Hazlett. The reverberated one-syllable shouts (for example at 1:22) and the infectious energy when the percussion increases its sophistication (also at 1:22) are standouts. But with each listen, it’s the panoramic view that plays the larger role in bringing the proper appreciation for the song.

At its start, “Suncats” takes a minimalist approach. The charm of the vocals carries the first almost minute-and-a-half. But the instruments step forward during each occurrence of the chorus. As noted already, we are particularly drawn to the percussion. The landscape changes dramatically at 3:17, when the brassy sound announces a bridge that introduces a choir (3:34).

The quality of “Suncats” extends to the poetry of its message - finding joy in what you’re doing. A favorite line is “We all fear death, but we don't live life.” And the choir has a line that we struggle with understanding, but we embrace each of our interpretations, which include, “Like waves and islands, we want to fight the tide.” In revealing the motivation behind “Suncats,” Hazlett says:
“I was lying on the floor of the studio sulking and strumming my guitar. The sun was reflecting off it and dancing along the wall when my Swedish friend pointed to the reflections and said "What do you call those in English?". I said we didn't really have a word for something like that. He explained in Sweden you call them 'Solkatter' which directly translates to 'Suncats.' That word flipped the switch for me. It took something so simple or unnoticeable and made it poetic. It was like a metaphor that snapped me out of my cliché post-break-up depression. Find a little beauty in the mundane and even a little good in the bad. If you do that nothing is ever a waste of time.”

Hazlett is an Australian vocalist/ songwriter. He is from Brisbane. “Suncats” was produced by Freddy Alexander and released via BLNK Music.

Lyrics of “Suncats” by Hazlett
I fled to faraway lands
I couldn't stay
Hometown off-beat romance
Waits on the tables, I crave

Memories crawling inside
Too much to handle
Suncats from these northern skies
Soothing the shadows we made

We all fear death but we don't live life
Heavy hearts have a crazy side

Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
It's salt, it's salt, it's salt
Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time

Forgive me you forced my hand
Held by another
Send all the good vibes you can
Friends become strangers

We all fear death but we don't live life
Heavy hearts have a crazy side

Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
It's salt, it's salt, it's salt
Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time

Like waves and islands
Like waves and islands
We want to fight the tide
We want to fight the tide

Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
It's salt, it's salt, it's salt
Just don't go thinking it's a waste of time
