Lunatic Wolf released a 5-song EP titled “Steady Ground.” Each song has its strength. From the perspective of vocals, “I’m Headed West, You Head East Again” is our standout. That song also includes a one-minute instrumental outro that is praiseworthy. “Holiday” has a calming acoustic start that is attention grabbing; “The Whistle Song” includes some enjoyable finger-picking guitar and an ending that isn’t telegraphed by the start; while “The End of the Road” is lyrically and harmonically the most intriguing song on the EP.
Still, “Careless” is our preferred single from “Steady Ground.” It is a playground where hooks gather to frolic with coordinated semi-independence. And although the drumming is primarily steady drive, “Careless” is the single with the most energizing percussion.
“Careless” begins with guitars and drums at high speed. When the vocals enter, the guitars become more sparse and sonic. The percussion remains energetic but less assertive. As the song progresses, the instrumentation varies, keeping the song “fresh” throughout its length.
In talking about the song, the band revealed:
As a band we've always been fascinated with themes of growth, childhood nostalgia and the end of life and love. "Careless" is our attempt at capturing the essence of moving into a new chapter of life and realizing that responsibilities have changed. This is reflected in the opening line "Careless just won't cut it anymore. A candid approach just won't hold."
Lunatic Wolf is a Folk Rock band based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The members are Gavin van den Berg (vocals), Richard Oldfield (piano), Jacques du Plessis (keyboard), Gavin Flaks (drums), Adrian Erasmus (guitar) and David Grevler (bass).
