Sinead O’Brien is an Irish poet from Limerick, although she is now based in London. “Taking On Time” is a steady tempo narrative on life. She refers to the song as a “call to arms.”
Listening to O’Brien causes us to wonder if her offerings can be fairly characterized as modernized Beatnik poetry of the 1950s. If so, a live performance should followed by finger snaps rather than hand claps.

Lyrics of “Taking On Time” by Sinead O’Brien
This that I am
Moving towards the world
This that I am
Taking on time
Moving off into the distance
To get closer again
Moving down the line
To start only once again
Take me to the walled city
To define the limits more clearly
Take me to the walled city
This that I am
Possessed by ideas
I am no more a thinker than a prisoner of dreams
A plague of enlightenment is no great gain
Enchained to my own creation
Order and chaos have stained my name
Order and chaos make a daily stake
Possessed by ideas
Now I take on time
Now I take on time
Everything here matters
Everything here matters
It's all in a frame
Stay just this way
Nothing should change
Forever we're standing inside frames
To transcend the world of things
We see untruly from inside frames.
Everything here matters
Nothing ever happens
Name the thing
I dreamed of a prison
Everything I wanted looking out
With no way back in
I watched the elevator rise and fall
Where the hills should
I watched walls
Where the skies would
I thought I was brave
That I wasn't afraid
Have I missed my call?
Are we late?
At the deafening dawn
At the break of the chains
Outside the limelight
This that I am
Moving towards the world
This that I am
Taking on time
Moving off into the distance
To get closer again
Moving down the line
To start only once again
Take me to the walled city
To define the limits more clearly
Take me to the walled city
This that I am
