“Juliet” by CREO – A Song Feature

CREO shared a single that is destined to solidify their reputation as a powerful live band. “Juliet” is pehaps the most hook-heavy of the songs from the Australian band. While some bands struggle to find a strong riff, “Juliet” layers them. At the start of the song, there is a hook that is more intricate and energetic, but includes timbre characteristics that remind us of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s guitar intro to David Bowie’s “China Girl.”

It’s the interplay of guitars during the instrumental portion beginning at 2:26 that fuels the desire to see CREO perform “Juliet” in a live setting. They are a trio, so reinforcements may be required. But the guitars don’t relinquish their stronghold on the song when the vocals return, making the final portion of “Juliet” a guitar wonderland for fans of the instrument.

Still, the other contributions to “Juliet” must be recognized. The synth establishes the foundation for the song, as evidenced at the start. And CREO continues its reign over the kingdom of “Attitude Rock.” The vocal screams of “Waste” are powerfully effective. In explaining the motivation for the lyrics, the band says:
“The track is a personal reflection of what our beloved hometown (Sydney) has become over the last 5 or so years. It’s not a protest piece because we’re not really that sort of band but more so an observation of the state of the current nightlife and the overall vibe of the city.  Some of our favourite places growing up have lost their heartbeat and we’ve felt somewhat helpless watching it all slowly decline into a corporate wasteland.”

CREO is based in Sydney, Australia. The members are Jorjee Haman (vocals), Carlos Romanos (guitar), Daniel Tsoltoudis (drums). They have been bunkered down over the past 12 months and are now prepared to make 2020 a productive year. Haman says about their efforts:
“There is a real sense of directness to these new songs. We worked tirelessly with our producer Nathan (Nathan Sheehy) up to all hours of many nights to make sure the music had clarity and every part and layer had a purpose. I think previously we’d throw a lot at the song for the sake of being creative and sometimes it was a little distracting. This time we really listened to what the songs needed musically and rid the barriers we set on ourselves - if the song needed a synth, we didn’t try to replicate it with a guitar - we just used a synth.”

Lyrics of “Juliet” by CREO
Wake me up in a little while
These neon eyes are resting deep
The rich, they’ve buried us wounded
The heavy pursed callous sheep

And we all just wait
To shake the scene asunder
With our hearts still lost
In nights of lucent wonder

Now we sit and rot like WASTE
And we’re helpless in this cage
We just WASTE
The more they take away
And we go…

Wake me up in a little while
These heavy limbs and tired eyes
Are weary of the funeral weekends
Where eulogies are penned with wry

But the lads recite
The memories - the old days
When the streets were bright
And brimming with a fresh blaze

Oh those days were wild
Before it all fell down
Cause now we just rot like WASTE
And we’re helpless in this cage
And we just WASTE
The more they take away
And we go…

We’re breathing for you lady
So keep moving for us, baby
[Repeat]

WASTE
And we’re helpless in this cage
And we just WASTE
The more they take away
And we go…

We’re breathing for you lady
So keep moving for us, baby
