The video for “Nevermind” opened our eyes to the talents of Alexander Jean. The duo’s name is the combination of middle names of its members, Mark Ballas and Brittany Carlson (“BC Jean”). As evident from the video, the power and emotion of BC Jean’s vocals are not studio-generated. She sits comfortably on the couch and “in her skin” during the stay-at-home performance. She has a charisma that could cause a viewer to overlook her husband, if Mark Ballas were not equally talented. There is an undeniable vocal chemistry. Within the video, that chemistry is particularly strong at the 1:30 mark. Their self-descriptions appear accurate:
“Mark is the frame holding everything together,” says BC. “He’s focused, prepared and passionate. I’m more of a mood ring, tending to paint on the edge.” Mark agrees, “BC is playful with her voice. The combination between my riffs and ideas with her instinctive penmanship and unpredictability is where we find magic.”
The video for the song "For Anybody Wondering" exhibits another dimension of Alexander Jean. Electric guitar soon supplants the acoustic guitar, and the vocals align with Rock sensibilities. Their vocal interaction is joined by physical playfulness. While explaining the song:
"We are talking about humans hurting one another and the disappointment that comes with that. We found through personal experience not to expect anything from anyone and that it’s healthy to find the ability to shrug off negativity and keep moving."
Alexander Jean reside in Laurel Canyon, a Southern California area with a storied musical history. BC Jean is a San Diegan native. She co-wrote “If I Were A Boy,” a song that achieved significant attention as a double A-side single released by Beyoncé (the other side was "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)"). Mark Ballas was born in Texas and raised in Liverpool/London. He played Charlie Price in the 2012 Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” and played Frankie Valli in the Broadway musical “Jersey Boys.”
