Hunter Hunted – SF Concert Review

If we were required to write an essay at the beginning of the school year on the standard topic of “What I Did on My Summer Vacation,” at least one paragraph would be devoted to experiences at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. We attended another concert on July 11, and have two more this month alone. On Thursday July 11, Hunter Hunted made the trip from Los Angeles to play for the band’s debut in the city close to the original home of the frontmen. Dan Chang and Michal Garner were previously members of Lady Danville.
Chang and Garner were joined by three other musicians, who we believe were Taylor Dexter (drum, photographer and birthday celebrator), Blake Straus (guitar) and Dre Babinski (backing vocals, guitar and violin).
The setlist for the evening was:
1. "Better Side"
2. "Ships"
3. "End of the World"
4. "Where is My Mind?" (Pixies cover)
5. "Dora Maar"
6. "Operating"
7. "Martians"? (Garner announced this was the debut of a “mostly completed" song)
8. "Gentle Folks"
9. "Keep Together"

All of the boxes for factors that contribute to a worthwhile performance were checked:
a) The band showed a high level of energy throughout the setlist - Check.
b) The songs had variety, so that the performance didn’t grow stale – Check (particularly with Babinski switching among the violin, an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar).
c) The band was engaged with the crowd – Check (despite the crowd having something of an uncommon chemistry within itself).
d) The songs were engaging – Check.
e) The sound system provided good quality production – Check (the Rickshaw sound system has performed better, but that’s not the band’s doing).
