“Get Found” by The Heart Of – A Song Review

There is a genuine appreciation for every song we feature on Indie Obsessive. But very few tracks strike a chord so strongly that they cause us to reflect on existential topics, such as the level of negative impact if music were to be taken from our lives. “Get Found” struck that chord. It isn’t merely the gentle beauty of the melody or the tenderness in the harmonization, although both of those qualities set the song apart from others we enjoy. “Get Found” has a poetry that is more than rhyming words within a verse; the lyrics have a thoughtful poetic beauty in single lines – “Regret is a sleeping totem.” We value even those statements with which there is some disagreement – “Hope is for pipedream chasers.”

“Get Found” has an abundance of praiseworthy features. Certainly, much thought was given to such details as when harmonization should enter and exit. It’s impressive that the banjo fits so smoothly into the track. And the instrumental outro has an intriguing combination of piano and percussion.

According to their Facebook page, The Heart Of is based in New York, NY. The record label is the highly respected Brooklyn Basement Records. The bio reads:
“Rooted in vocal harmonies and acoustic melodies, The Heart Of captures the emotion and imagination of listeners through eccentric story-telling and cinematic songs. With a notebook bursting at the seams with songs, The Heart Of was brought to life in a farmhouse in Bronson, Michigan, where their debut EP was recorded.”

Lyrics of “Get Found” by The Heart Of
A bird in hand
And two in the cold
Traced on the paper
Which fades in its folds

Regret is a sleeping totem
Silence a broken modem
Shimmer love lay lacked grace
Placed too close to hold

Been lost
I want to get found
One more mile
I want to go down
[Repeat]

Searched too long
I don’t know what for now
I want to get out

Am I Hyde? Am I Jekyll?
Do you see me at all?
Am I flesh? Am I metal?
Am I breathing the fog?

Time is a great eraser
Cinched-up waist betrays
Get stuck on our own

Been lost
I want to get found
One more mile
I want to go down
[Repeat]

Searched too long
I don’t know what for now
I want to get out

Been lost
I want to get found
One more mile
I want to go down
[Repeat]

Searched too long
I don’t know what for now
I want to get out

“Stay” by VIVE – A Song Review

As Paul Newman asked Robert Redford in puzzled admiration, “Who are those guys?” That was a catch phrase of the 1969 movie “Butch Cassidy,” but we asked the same question (also in admiration) as we hunted for information about the Brooklyn-based band VIVE.

Based on their song “Stay,” VIVE is a band that is equally strong at vocally driving a song and allowing their guitars to do the heavy lifting. The track begins calmly with band vocals asking the question, “Why don’t you stay?” The start gives no sign of an impending guitar invasion. As “Stay” progresses, there are hints of a shift away from the vocal-centric nature. The guitar is no longer the background support, instead taking a Shoegaze/Rock position in the track. Then, 90 seconds into the song, a cordial coup occurs. The guitar is in power, until the masterful arrangement, production and mixing temporarily returns “Stay” to its tranquil beginnings.

The Soundcloud stream states that "Stay" embodies the constant tension of coming and going, the constant tension of birth and death. VIVE is a trio in Brooklyn who describe their music as being about life and love and why.

“Lone Wolf” by Georgi Kay – A Song Review

It’s fitting that someone who has worked to achieve prominent sophistication in live looping should release a song titled “Lone Wolf.” The lyrics of Georgi Kay’s single clearly embrace life beyond the stage, but her performance of the textured track as a solo artist adds another dimension to “Lone Wolf.”

The loop petal released solo musicians from studios, allowing those with a range of skills to add layers of sounds atop looping song segments. Advances in on-the-spot vocal processing and vocal playback add to the magic, giving a single on-stage voice the ability to generate harmony. A video of a live performance of “Lone Wolf” is embedded in this post.

Speaking about “Lone Wolf,” Georgi Kay explained that the song is about true loneliness:
"Accepting the fact that no matter how many good people you have in your life, they will never truly know and understand you as deeply and as intimately as you know yourself. What’s so funny and oddly comforting about this truth, is that we have all felt this way."
“For me, the song creates a desolate landscape, isolated and untouched – myself being the only living soul within it. That feeling of loneliness and silence forces me to look within myself and reflect on everything that makes me who and what I am to a point where I can accept all of it – transforming my loneliness into something beautiful.”

The instrumentation of “Lone Wolf” is layered, but each layer promotes the feel of being alone. We particularly appreciate the low frequency rumbles that populate most to the track. In a live setting, the rumbles likely vibrate the contents of chest cavities of the people close to the stage.

Georgi Kay is currently based in Los Angeles. She has toured with Tash Sultana, another looper on the rise.

Lyrics of “Lone Wolf” by Georgi Kay
It’s like no matter
How many good people in my life
I feel lonely
Always feel lonely

It’s just a moment
I get stuck into every time
It’s taking over
Maybe it’s your love that I need

How can I let you in
If I’m putting up a wall everytime?
You gotta break it down
If you wanna come cross that line

How can you breathe me in
If you’re gonna get no air?
Hey I know that
I know that
I know that

I know that ain’t fair
Will you think of me
When you drive with the windows down?
Will you understand
Why I’m here with a broken crown?

My city of dirt
My home, my heart, my town
No, I’m not going to leave now
Hey yeah

I will always be a lone wolf
There is nothing you can do
I will always be a lone wolf
Forever howling at the moon

[Repeat from start]
