Earlier this week, an entry in a different blog (one of our favorites) praised the work of Denai Moore, who is a London-based artist. Moore recently released her debut EP entitled “Saudade.” The blog provided a positive review on each track of the EP, with the reviewer being particularly fond of the song “Wolves.”
We listened to the tracks of the EP and agreed with the assessment of the reviewer. However, of greatest interest to us was the similarity between the start of “Wolves” and a song by a fellow Londoner – Ben Howard. Maybe it is a style of singing that is more common than we realize. Or maybe it is common in London. Defining “cadence” as “a melodic configuration that creates a sense of pause," ”Wolves” by Denai Moore uses a combination of singing cadence and acoustic guitar in a manner interestingly similar to the song “Old Pine” by Ben Howard.
Below is the Denai Moore track and a clipped portion of the Ben Howard song. There are certainly differences, but the similarity in cadence is interesting (starting from nineteen seconds into "Wolves").
