“New Ways” by Daughter – A Song Review

Within the last month, we ran across at least three reviews comparing a female vocalist to Elena Tonra. Two of the reviews didn’t mention that Tonra is in the band Daughter. It appears that Daughter is receiving the attention the band deserves. Not long ago, Tonra was perhaps best known in the U.S. as being part of an uncomfortable conversation with David Letterman following the band's performance on Letterman’s show. While we love Letterman, we found it surprising that he was so accomplished in conversations with any type of guest, other than the musical guests. If you’re interested, the Letterman appearance is embedded at the bottom of this post.
“New Ways” is a track from Daughter’s second album, “Not To Disappear.” Relative to most of the band’s earlier singles, there is a greater emphasis on electronic drums. The song does include Shoegaze, but it doesn’t emphasis that aspect until the final portion of “New Ways.”
“New Ways” is still available as a free download from one of our favorite sites, the KEXP blog - http://blog.kexp.org/2016/02/22/song-of-the-day-daughter-new-ways/
Daughter is based in London. The members are Elena Tonra (vocals and guitar), Igor Haefeli (guitar), and Remi Aguilella (drums).

Lyrics of “New Ways” by Daughter
Washed out brain
I have a dirty mind
Oh, I need, I need new ways
To waste my time
I need new ways

Washed out brain
I live alone, alone, alone
Washed out face
Keep it inside, I need new ways
To waste, my time
I need, I need new ways

I’m trying to get out
Find a subtle way out
Not just cross myself out
Not just disappear

I’ve been trying to stay out
But there’s something in you
I can’t be without
I just need it here

I’m trying to get out
Find a subtle way out
Not to cross myself out
Not to disappear

I’ve been trying to stay out
But there’s something in you
I can’t be without
I just need it here

Oh I need
New ways to waste my time
I need new ways
To waste my time
I need new ways
To waste my time
