“Again” by Old Cities – A Song Feature

Until the 1:24 mark, it is easy to reach the conclusion that the most attractive aspect of “Again” is the poignancy of the lyrics and their ability to convey a sense of being emotionally adrift – “What I’m looking for is magic, gold in a coal mine.” Then, the guitar hook enters and that early conclusion dissolves. According to the press content about the track from Old Cities, it’s the use of non-diatonic chords and a gradual crescendo that captures the listener’s attention.

Old Cities is Jordi White, who was born in Nazareth, Israel and raised on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. Other contributors are Nik Karlin, Mitch McDonough and James Dear. “Again” is the 2nd single off Old Cities forthcoming EP, "Old Cities I," which is due out August.

Lyrics of “Again” by Old Cities
Putting the puzzle back together
Searching for my piece of mind
What I’m looking for is magic
Gold in a coal mine

Blindly swinging at the shadows
Trying to hold onto the light
What I’m looking for is answers
Just tell me wrong from right

But oh there’s no way to know
Which way the image is supposed to go
And just when I feel like it’s starting to show
In comes the wind and the rain and I know
Here I am again
Here I am again

Trying to find a melody
That makes me feel like I’m alright
Picking through these fractured pieces
Trying to find the perfect line

But oh there’s no way to know
Which way the image is supposed to go
And just when I feel like it’s starting to show
In comes the wind and the rain and I know
Here I am again
Here I am again

With my eyes closed
I can see you
As the dark fades
I will reach you
As the day breaks
And you slip through
Once more I
I have lost you

Putting the puzzle back together
For my piece of mind
I'm still looking for that magic
Gold in a coal mine
