“We All Believe” by Sean Koch – A Song Feature

Perhaps better than anywhere else, musicians from South Africa understand the full spectrum from nuanced rhythms to forceful percussion that stirs the primal instincts music lovers enjoy visiting. Some months ago, Sean Koch released “Feel the Energy,” a plea to tap into the historical and natural energies that reside in and around us. The rhythmic shifts bring a beauty to the song and a power to its message.

“We All Believe” shows Sean Koch’s dexterity. In this single, the shifts are vocally driven more than they are instrument driven. Initially, the vocals of “We All Believe” are smooth and melodic, suitable for a ballad or folk song. Later, the song has a hip-hop cadence, as first heard at 0:42. Even within the “hip-hop” segments, there are shifts, such as the drop of the instrumental layer for emphasis on the line “Stop wrapping all those thoughts up in dollar bills and greed.” If pressed to compare the style of the song to another band, we would cite Milky Chance.

In talking about the message of the song, Sean Koch explained:

“It’s easy to get caught up in the rat race and the manic life that most of us find ourselves in but it’s more about taking a step back. The feeling I need to share is being stoked for what is around us. Feeding off the positive vibes and giving thanks.”

“We All Believe” will join “Feel the Energy” on the upcoming debut album “Your Mind is a Picture.” Sean Koch is now a quartet. They are based in Cape Town. The members are Sean Koch (guitar, vocals), Shaun Cloete (bass, lead guitar, keys), Ellis Silverman (drums, percussion), and Dean Bailey (bass).
