“Hollow Sound” by The Satellite Station - A Song Feature

If there is justice in the Indie universe, “Hollow Sound” will cause an explosion that will test the limits of safety equipment. The single from The Satellite Station is exceptional in every dimension. The lyrics are intelligent and relatable, even inspiring. The message is a focus on perspective – the short-term and long-term limitations of being human.

Vocally, “Hollow Sound”” is striking, yet pleasing. Early in the song, the voice of The Satellite Station is consistent with the admissions of personal weaknesses: “It’s hard to face that I’m just a man, and I all I can do is the best I can.” Later, the conviction to the existential message is apparent: “So when I lose this war with time, and I finally close my eyes, what will be left behind?”. Still the attractiveness and effectiveness of the vocals increase when a female voice enters in harmony with that of The Satellite Station.

Instrumentally, like the vocals, if there was any temptation to be satisfied with early success, it was resisted. A piano sits atop background quieter sounds to drive the melody, while a kickdrum “heartbeat” provides the rhythm. Then, an electric guitar fully surfaces almost three minutes into “Hollow Sound.”

     Quoting his bio:
The Satellite Station is the solo project of singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Travis Rue. In 2019, The Ohio native began recording new material that melds his pop background with indie/folk elements. With haunting folk-inspired melodies and emotionally deep lyrics, Rue’s storytelling transports the listener to relatable experiences in their own lives.

Lyrics of “Hollow Sound” by The Satellite Station (with some best guesses)
My whole life I have been afraid
I have hedged my bets and I’ve played it safe

It’s hard to face that I’m just a man
And I all I can do is the best I can

Cause I never give myself a break
Every good thing is either luck or fate
Sowing seeds will find new ground
But the beat of my heart makes a hollow sound
Yea, the beat of my heart, it makes a hollow sound

And though I, I’m losing sleep
I’ve got miles to go
I’ve got mouths to feed
So when I lose this war with time
And I finally close my eyes
What will be left behind?
Behind?

So the truth is all I’ll ever be
Is just a shadow cast in the open sea
When will I leave that stone behind
As just a marker of this passing time?

Cause I never give myself a break
Every good thing is either luck or fate
Sowing seeds will find new ground
But the beat of my heart is a hollow sound
Yea, the beat of my heart makes a hollow sound

And though I, I’m losing sleep
I’ve got miles to go
I’ve got mouths to feed
So when I lose this war with time
And I finally close my eyes
What will be left behind?
Behind?
[Repeat]
