“Symmetry” by SYML – A Song Feature

SYML is not a newcomer to generating powerful musical pieces. His 2017 single “Where’s My Love” carries an emotional power that cannot be explained by the simplicity of the piano and strings that accompany questioning around a missed lover. ”Body” is another moving single in the sense that attention to the song displaces the emotion of the listener.

With “Symmetry,” SYML exhibits his ability to yield power in another dimension. The force of “Symmetry” is held first in the instruments and second in the presentation of the lyrical content. Yes, the vocals are wondrous, but in comparison to his earlier gems, SYML uses the instruments to do the heavy lifting. Just beyond the two-minute mark, a crescendo is built by strings, horns and percussion. Almost one minute later, the crescendo reaches its peak and immediately descends. It is extraordinarily effective.

“Symmetry” is a musical portrait, both lyrically and instrumentally. The song reflects upon black holes. The crescendo can be interpreted as traveling toward and then into a black hole, but there may be equally plausible explanations. In talking about the song, SYML explained:
"I have been obsessed with black holes for awhile now, mostly with how insignificant they make me feel. There is something extremely beautiful and daunting about infinity, especially when it comes to our inability to understand it. This song feels like the dust that gathered in an abandoned space station that’s been circling earth for years…"

SYML is the project of Brian Fennell. Simplicity is what moves SYML – pronounced “simmel”, it means “simple” in Welsh. Adopted and not knowing his history or connection to his Welsh roots until the age of 18, Fennell creates music from his basement home studio in Issaquah, 20 miles to the east of Seattle.

Lyrics of “Symmetry” by SYML
Come now child the day is long
Hide not yourself from me

Angels sing the final song
Silence will turn to sleep

Take heed my son
The darkness will come

Blackholes will bend the proudest ones
And change up your symmetry

Just as the night swallows the sun
I know you’ll come for me

Take heed my son
The darkness will come

Rest now, my child, the day is done
The dark comes for everything

Inside the heart of everyone
There lives infinity
