Tom Odell and Cillie Barnes - Concert Review

Tom Odell and Cafe du Nord
We had another good experience at the Café du Nord in San Francisco. On May 9th, we saw Tom Odell, who was joined on stage by Max Goff (bass guitar, Czech-Ease and vocals), Max Cliverd (guitars and vocals, and Daniel MacDougall (drums and vocals). Opening for Odell was Cillie Barnes.
Odell's setlist - "Another Glove?"
We reviewed the previous visit of Tom Odell to San Francisco (if you are interested in Odell's performance at the Rickshaw Stop in January, CLICK HERE). On this visit, he didn’t damage his piano, but it wasn’t because of a decision to be careful. At times Odell plays with gentleness, such as at the outset of the song “Sense.” But at other times, his style can fairly be called “piano bashing.” Playing forcefully with the heels of your hands is “bashing.” And we all can do it. But unlike most of us, Odell can make it melodic and can fit it in as a necessary part of the song.

We were certain that Tom Odell would be good, and we were not disappointed. The surprising part of the event was just how much we enjoyed Cillie Barnes during her opening performance. Barnes primarily performs in Los Angeles, but she gained some national exposure from “Indian Hill” being on the season 4, episode 2 soundtrack of the television show 91210. Coincidentally, the morning after the concert, a blog we frequent (Largehearted Boy) identified a free download of the Cillie Barnes release "Brainwash." We included the song below.
