“Adore” by Savages – A Song Review

Savages are about to release the album “Adore Life,” which means another U.S. tour. With each tour, the band becomes more polished. This is not a band that makes adjustments to please crowds. They carry the attitude of “this is the band, if you don’t like what  we're doing, deal with it yourself.” The attitude is apparent in the video of “Adore.”
During the course of a performance, Jehnny Beth seemingly tries to lock eyes each attendee – not just eye contact, it’s a momentary lock. That skill is evidenced in the first seconds of the video. On the other hand, videos are inconsistent (a necessary evil?) with her dislike of picture and video capture during performances. For one San Francisco performance, patrons were told at the door that cell phones and cameras were to remain in pockets, at the request of the band. During the Austin City Limits Festival of 2013, Jehnny Beth stood motionless at the barrier in front of the stage, and after some time announced that the urge to take pictures should be satisfied.

Lyrics of “Adore” by Savages
If only I didn't want the world
I wouldn't make you feel so sad
I'm sure my shame would be gone
Is it human to adore life?

If only I'd hidden my lust
And starved a little bit more
If only I didn't ask for more
Is it human to adore life?

I adore life

If only I'd lived beyond regret
I wouldn't feel guilt for what I take
Is it human to ask for more?
Is it human to adore life?

I know evil when I see it
I know good and I just do it
If I hadn't been so starved
Is it human to adore life?

I understand the urgency of life
In the distance there is truth which cuts like a knife
Maybe I will die
Maybe tomorrow so I need to say

I adore life

If only I had been more shy
And hid every tear I cried
If only I didn't wish to die
Is it human to adore life?

If only I didn't care so much
For the feel of your cold, cold touch
In every bed I leave behind
Is it human to adore life?

I understand the urgency of life
In the distance there is truth which cuts like a knife
Maybe I will die
Maybe tomorrow so I need to say

I adore life

I adore life
Do you adore life?
