“A Still Heart” by The Naked and Famous – A Song Review

The band stepped away from its signature sound in which chest-thumping percussion drives Synthpop featuring the vocals of Alisa Xayalith. That approach worked well in such songs as “Higher” and “Young Blood.” In comparison, the instruments heard in "A Still Heart" allow the vocals to control the listener’s attention. With the exception of a brief intro and an only slightly longer outro, “A Still Heart” is the gently presented thoughts from Alisa.
The song is a reshaping of the band’s 2013 hit “Hearts Like Ours.” The lyrics are closely aligned. Notably, the track also includes characteristics of “Stillness,” so the title of the recent release is likely a merger of the two singles from 2013.

The Naked and Famous consist of Alisa Xayalith (vocals, keyboards), Thom Powers (vocals, guitars), Aaron Short (keyboards), David Beadle (bass) and Jesse Wood (drums). They are from Auckland, New Zealand.

Lyrics of “A Still Heart” by The Naked and Famous
Borders and horizon lines
We're alone but side by side
We're yet to dream, we're yet to dream
Nothing here is what it seems
Ahhh, Ahhh

There's an animal inside
There's a fear that won't subside
Of all the things I'll never do
Will I ever follow through?
There's an animal inside
There's an animal inside

Half awake and almost dead
Keeping empty beds elsewhere
We're yet to bleed, we're yet to bleed
All the time and energy
Ahhh, Ahhh

Could we try to reinvent
Feed the head with common sense
Through the streets and avenues
I'm climbing up the walls with you
Climbing up the walls with you
I'm climbing up the walls with you

Half awake and almost dead
Keeping empty beds elsewhere
We're yet to bleed, we're yet to bleed
All the time and energy
Ahhh, Ahhh

And if we could be still, still, be still
If we could be still, still, be still
