When bands upload songs onto Soundcloud, they can designate a genre that will be displayed to listeners. If you visit the Soundcloud uploads of Turtle, “Electronic” is the designation for songs uploaded within the last twelve months. When Indie Obsessive was introduced to Turtle’s song “Colours” earlier this year (thank you contributor Karen M.), the designation seemed appropriate. In comparison, it isn’t as fitting for the most recent release, “Silent Weapons.”
Electronic processing certainly plays an important role in “Silent Weapons,” particularly in the vocals. But the instruments are “raw” compared to the typical sound in the Electronic genre. It’s that rawness of the instruments that we appreciate most in the song and it’s the blend of Turtle’s electronic processing with the more traditional sound of electric instruments that distinguishes “Silent Weapons” from other songs that we enjoy.
Turtle is the performance moniker of Jon Cooper. He is a songwriter and producer based in Glaswegian, Scotland.
