“Visiting Some Old Friends” - Escapists and Flagship

Escapists released another strong track from their debut album “Only Bodies,” which is scheduled for an August 4 release. The song is “Eyes.” Potentially, we like “Eyes” more than the song (“Blood”) we put on last week’s Top Songs of 2014, First Half.
There is always some concern when a band relies on falsetto. As an example, we enjoyed the music of Bastille from the first visit to “Pompeii” (the song; we’ve never been in the region of the historic city), and grabbed the early opportunities to see Bastille for fear that the vocal strain on Dan Smith might force them to adjust their sound. Some singers don’t have problems with falsetto singing over a span of years, others do. Escapists live in the falsetto range throughout “Eyes.” But the earlier releases from the band show that they can live comfortably in other vocal neighborhoods.

Flagship will be making a weekly visit to The Chapel in San Francisco during three weeks in August. The performances will be on the Thursdays of August 14, 21 and 28. The North Carolina band recently released the song “Gold and Silver,” which will be a track on their upcoming self-titled album (due sometime in Autumn).
