“All the Pretty Girls” by Kaleo – A Song Review

The thinking was that listening to the Canadian satellite radio stations would lead to discoveries of Canadian bands (channels 162 through 174 on our SiriusXM subscription). Seems logical, right? But the most recent discovery while applying the logic is Kaleo, which is yet another strong band from Iceland.
“All the Pretty Girls” can be divided into three sections, with each being better than the previous one. The start of the song features falsetto vocals with light acoustic support. But at the 1:39 mark, the energy is increased and the electric instruments come into play. This second section takes a number of turns, particularly with respect to the vocals. The third section kicks in at the 3:29 mark. Fans of Ben Howard will recognize and enjoy the similarities in the approach within this third section, while also recognizing that Kaleo provides improvements upon the approach.

The members of Kaleo are Jökull Júlíusson (vocals, guitar), Davíð Antonsson (drums, vocals), Daníel Ægir Kristjánsson (bass), and Rubin Pollock (lead guitar). The band is based in Mosfellsbær, Iceland. Kaleo will attend SXSW in Austin this month and will be touring the U.S. with Vance Joy during April.

Staying with amazement that there are so many strong Icelandic bands, the appreciation continues to grow for “Fed All My Days” by Mani Orrason (born in Iceland, but lives in Spain).
